I can see some logic behind not having Trent in as wing back for a Southgate side. He’s going to be asked to put in one hell of a shift up and down the right side which takes away his creativity and him wanting to be on the ball. Either that or asked to play very deep and alongside the right centre back That’s just not his game in either respect. He’ll also want to come inside to get on the ball to an already congested central area and mean no width out wide right.
EDIT: Ignore that, thought we’d gone 3-4-3 with wing backs!!
If we’re scouting someone to play alongside Mac in a double pivot that reinjders lad who got rave reviews last night has been playing that role for Milan and interestingly slot managed him while at AZ so would know a bit about him.
The potential change in formation to 4-2-3-1 under slot may actually get the best out of Gakpo and Nunez. Gakpo having a great euros on the left of the 3 and Nunez having a great copa America as the 1.
Interestingly seems that kvartaskhelia wants to play in the premier league and has turned down psg. Now Georgia are out things could hot up for his signature and could be another option along with Gordon.
Probably be good to get virg rested up and involved in pre-season as early as possible as he’ll be a key player in helping slot settle in so sooner Holland go out the better.
This summer transfer window proved very difficult given the changes behind the scenes and new coaching structure in place. That combined with the European championships and Olympics made it a very challenging market to do business in. The value in players has proved hard to find given the inflated market over the past few windows as well being committed to the new financial regulations that have been brought into effect. We invested heavily in a squad rebuild last summer and see huge potential after a season settling in with this group of players. We see Arne slot as the perfect coach to develop and get the most from the world class talent both within the first team and coming through the academy and see an exciting season ahead where we will be challenging for the top honours.
Sounds like a similar situation as to what happened with Phillips, priced him out of a move with an over-inflated valuation, stagnated his career and lost out on some sort of semi-decent transfer fee and wages off the books.
I find it strange with the mane/salah transfer as alternatives to Brandt/gotze as they’re not similar at all in terms of profile of player for those wide positions.
As long as we don’t end up with a Rafa situation “they thought me a lampshade but I asked for a sofa” situation then we’ve just got to trust the process. It looks like he’s bringing in his coaches and off field team with him toowhich is also key.
