Gotta be careful here. You give £120k to Raheem and then Coutinho, Sturridge, Hendo and others are knocking on the door (and rightly so). If we were talking about Stevie in his prime or Luis then I'd say break the bank because they'd be on a different level to the rest but Sterling is not, IMO, head and shoulders better than the three I mentioned above.

No, I didn't miss that. I saw him being excellent in transition and attack but not being pressed to death as he has been this season and I saw him being defensively suspect as he has often been. That's not a dig at Stevie, I just don't think he has the defnsive mindset you need to operate there alone. Last season we had Luis and Sturridge to make up for our defensive failings. Now, if you had Masch coupled with Stevie, I think you could still play him there. But we don't :sadface:

b******s Some of us could see past our SG-tinted specs to recognise that Lucas is, and has always been, more effective in that position.

Brian Reade and Mike Nevin (on TAW) have nailed it for me: Paisley / Shankly / Dalglish / Rafa would have managed this better: Find him a role in the system where he is more effective than let him (and the club's fortunes) decline by playing him a role where he no longer has the legs OR bring in a quality replacement well ahead of time and manage the transition out.Stevie has always (wrongly, IMO) believed that his best position should be Centre Mid. He's always been far more effective in an attacking role but he wants to continue playing that defensive role and expects to start most (if not all) games.
