Sir Murray Stuart-Smith continued to receive honours years later. In 1997 he was responsible for deciding that the original verdict of accidental death didn't need another inquest.
During a meeting with families, he said : “Have you got a few of your people or are they like the Liverpool fans, turn up at the last minute?”
In the 2012 Birthday Honours he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG)
He died aged 97 last year.
