I know what you mean, in that he’s not a “gifted” footballer. But that’s not been the requirement of any full-back, ever, except maybe Trent. The flip-side of what you’re saying though, is that if it’s just a matter of coaching and paying attention, then why haven’t there been loads as good as him? (Because he’s actually a fantastic footballer). -
Yeah.Maybe he was going to ask the fullbacks to push up more, regardless of who was playing there in this game. Villa didn’t offer much pace out wide that other recent teams have, so maybe he was more comfortable getting them to bomb on.

I don’t think anybody is saying they’re bad players. I think they’re good players, but appear to have been bought without a proper system or continuity in mind. Or they have mental (Kerkez), or perhaps physical limitations (Wirtz) which makes them unsuited to this club/league. Early days obviously but the warning signs are there.

Yes, you’ve got to look at the overall contribution to the team. He’s dilutive, rather than additive these days.
