We were 30 points off Arsenal but a large chunk of that was due to Owen, despite being our top goalscorer and injured for a lot of the season, missing penalties and other chances? So, taking it a step farther, Houllier lost his job because of Owen's [lack of] ability infront of goal and therefore Benitez is only at the club - and we're European champions - as a result of Owen's failure to put away chances so we should be eternally grateful to him i.e. which is what Samuel is saying in his article Owen wasn't as good in his last season with us as previous seasons but Houllier's insistance on bringing him back so quickly after injury (same with Kewell iirc) after Christmas didn't help. He only lasted a few games before aggrevating the injury I think. Funny how the original injury however was as a result of him falling badly on his ankle (?), against Arsenal at home, when he was closing down an Ashley Cole clearance down by the corner flag. Certainly showed plenty of fight then. That's football for you. Gerrard, Alonso and Hamann totally pissed over the Arsenal midfield last year at home but Mellor got man of the match. Similar thing with Gerrard vs Olympiacos. It's the nature of football.
