Alan Shearer only scored 23 goals in 118 games for Southampton, who he left when he was about 22, then he bagged in loads in the following years with Blackburn and Newcastle. Hopefully Carroll will do likewise for us.

Anyone read this new column in The Guardian, supposedly penned by an anonymous Premiership player? Last week's one was about footballers using twitter and this week he was on about the deficiencies in TV pundits' analysis of matches. Interesting reads so far. Wonder who he could be, I've seen Kevin Davies mentioned as a possible candidate! http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/22/the-secret-footballer http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/29/secret-footballer-andy-gray-pundits

If they quote a fake interview does it not also cast doubt on the validity of their claim about this clause?

Can't see the rationale behind this mooted Warnock move at all, especially now with Johnson looking like he can do well at LB which still leaves Aurelio and, if needs be, Agger & Wilson can do a job there too. On the plus side, at least it seems to confirm PFK is being shunted out the exit door

But how would it actually work in practice? Everyone here is passionate about Liverpool yet we see strongly divergent opinions on issues such as players/management/tactics/new stadium etc etc. So how would a "fan rep" on the board go about representing fan opinion when that opinion is often divided?

Another young goalkeeper? We're going to be able to field a goalies XI at this rate of going! Come to think of it, that would probably suit Roy's defensive mindset perfectly.

I didn't read it that way; Hunter has a couple digs at him in the piece: "Worst of all, however, was the innate caution of a side that had, in Hodgson's words, nothing to lose. Those who gained free admission were considering compensation by the end." "..it did not augur well for Hodgson when Anfield began chanting "attack, attack, attack" with the contest in its embryonic stage and Liverpool's rigid formation failing to excite." "..a cautious and often careless Liverpool tested even the patience of those who had come to enjoy a freebie." " Irrespective of who was on parade, this was unacceptable."

Louise Taylor's match report on the Newcastle game in The Guardian had a few digs at him too (albeit with a Rafa-legacy remark thrown in) : "If the Geordie managerial jury will be out for some time, many on Merseyside have long been insistent that Roy Hodgson is not the right successor for Rafael Benítez. An ability to hold your nerve under often hysterical pressure is a prerequisite for managing in fiercely parochial cities such as Newcastle and Liverpool. The growing suspicion is that Hodgson's hitherto impressive judgment has been skewed by the demands of restoring Liverpool to former glories. On Saturday his tetchy, strained demeanour was much at odds with a previously urbane persona as manager of Fulham. Suddenly the man proficient in five languages seems inexplicably stumped by the idiosyncrasies of Scouse. ....Hodgson was ridiculed for a bizarrely despairing piece of technical-area behaviour, performed in the wake of Barton's goal. It saw Liverpool's manager repeatedly rub his hands so violently across his face that it appeared as if he were vainly attempting to exfoliate the pain with an imaginary pumice stone. When asked why his team have won once away in the league this season, he replied: "Because we can't win away." If, given the dubious legacy Hodgson inherited from Rafael Benítez, it cannot be seen to be a disaster that Liverpool are only just behind Newcastle in mid-table, their manager's defensive body language does not inspire confidence. Nor does it seem remotely likely to unlock the team's creative impulses." LinK: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/dec/13/newcastle-united-liverpool-premier-league

Maybe they could lend him back to us in January to "protect his value"!

What's happening with Mascher at Barca, is he getting many starts or is he on the periphery of the team?

I am 50. Been passionate about Liverpool ever since being electrified as a kid by seeing Bill Shankly interviews and the Kop in full voice on telly. I have NEVER hated a Liverpool manager as much as Roy Hodgson. Pleeaaaase ye footballing gods, get him GONE -pronto!

Many congrats Leo!! One of the things that struck me watching Lucas on Sunday was he was winning free kicks rather than giving them away which was one of the most vexing aspects of his play before now. Great to see and hopefully the lad can build on from here and really cement his place in the side.

I wouldn't be tooo downcast by Henry's comments. He's only just arrived, it's his first interview with the BBC -he's hardly likely to say "God, yeah, Hodgson's crap ain't he?". More diplomatic to make supportive noises about the manager then, a couple months down the line, if team is still playing rubbish he can say "We gave Roy our full support when we arrived but sadly it hasn't worked out as we would have liked and we think it best for all parties to make a change". Fingers crossed anhyow! Ooops hadnt seen 440,000's post, which kinda makes same point

Instead of the Rafatollah, we'd have the Roy Fawkes.

Not to be forgotten during these tough times
heighway replied to Bootle Buck's topic in Liverpool FC
The charisma, passion and wit of Shanks were a large part of what won me over as a kid to loving Liverpool -the sight of and sound of Kop in full voice and the all red strip cemented the deal. I always loved Shanks' quote about building Liverpool up to a bastion of invinciblity -and he and Paisley and Fagan and Moran and Dalglish achieved all that over several decades. Then we get these Yanks, these Anti-Shanks Yanks, and in just three years they have done so much to wreck and reverse the legacy of Shanks et al, what a horror show, and soooo painful to watch. Pleeeze send us a buyer (& manager!) soooon that'll get us back on the right track
