Yeah and the point remains this is a ridiculous thing to do. You can't just strip out 3 games because it doesn't suit your opinion of his goal threat. He's on about 1 in 4 for his Liverpool career overall. Which is about what his career total is too. Downing is on about 1 in 10 throughout his career, Henderson's on about 1 in 20. Dirk's on about 1 in 3 career (1 in 4 for Liverpool). It's not exaggerating then to say that Maxi's record indicates he's substantially more of a goal threat than two players who've played an awful lot more than him this season.

yes, the Messi thing was flippant to make a point about what you'd done. The fact that you've taken it literally and responded in such a fashion indicates the kind of literal-mindedness which is characteristic of the dim. As has been pointed out on numerous occasions his career record is about 1 in 4: him scoring goals isn't really an anomaly. Yeah you're right you don't have to address everything. But when you choose to ignore facts which annihilate your opinion you end up looking not only stupid(er) but bloody-minded.

Messi's not the same goal threat either if we take away the purple patch where he's scored 17 in 7 games either. In the premier league this season he's scored his two goals at 200 minutes per goal. Only Bellamy and Gerrard better that. Adam's two goals are at ~1000 minutes per goal. Dirk's goal is at 1500 minutes, Henderson's at ~2000 minutes. Downing hasn't scored in the premier league in what must be way more minutes than Dirk.

HOCM is what killed Marc Vivien-Foe and is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in the young. Your dad is right - it usually causes no symptoms until you have sudden cardiac arrest. It can be screened for reasonably accurately but screening has to be pretty regular. While that's probably the most likely other cardiac conditions can do the same thing. If, and it's a big if, it's true that he had no pulse for 2 hours then it's pretty amazing that he's moving four limbs and speaking, however minimally.

I think Messi is probably the best player ever in terms of consistent effectiveness (though I was quite young when Maradona was peaking). About the only thing I can say about him on the negative side is that I've never seen him do anything that I've not seen done as Cruyff did with his turn, or even that goal which Ronaldinho scored at Chelsea where he just stood on the edge of the box, dummied Carvalho and toe poked it in the top corner off virtually no backlift.

That's true obviously. However the rest of our midfielders this season (Downing, Kuyt, Gerrard, Lucas, Adam, Spearing, Henderson) currently have six league goals so right now a man who might get a couple of hat-tricks a season and chip in with a few more would be very welcome.

Agreed. Amazes me he's not been used more. He got 10 league goals last season off 28 appearances quite a few of which will have been as sub. We could really do with someone in his position chipping 10. (Or indeed in any position...)

Agreed. The one where he didn't follow up Suarez was glaring but more generally his runs have too little variety. He constantly lurks towards the back post. A forward who runs across the defender towards the near post would in all probability have scored at least two yesterday.

Been getting worse for a few years IMO. He used to score several a season from outside the box (or at least that's how I remember it) whereas now he hardly every scores from distance.

Yep, it's a massive problem alright - especially the £55m on the latter two. One of whom doesn't look suited to the way we seem to want to play and the other is arguably just not good enough and/or mentally not up to it.

Yeah of course there was some selective memory but I still think the basic point holds. We've been a club (H and G years accepted) that has broadly done the right thing. Today I think the club didn't have much choice but to do pretty much what it's done. Totally agree.

The problem with the MIllwall approach (no one likes us we don't care) is: a) It's not befitting of a club of our stature and history - the club has a long established reputation for doing things well, behaving in a dignified fashion etc b) The reality is we're trying to sell the club worldwide and get the best sponsorship deals to help us win
