yes that was quoted in the article I linked to. The point is that is open to a lot of interpretation. For example full backs frequently try to block crosses with their hands behind their back as having their hands out to the side risks the ref giving a penalty. Conversely defenders never do that Schmeichel star jump thing in the box as it would on obviously risk a penalty if it hit their hand. I'd have felt hard done by had we not got that penalty given.

The rules are quite vague as this BBC article says. Looking at what Elleray says I'd say it's pretty hard to argue that Allen was protecting himself - probably a pen.

Agreed and I'm not sure I'd go higher than that. For all the talk of context re the likes of Downing, you can throw back that Bale (whom it seems both Barca and Real Madrid would take) signed a recent contract at 75k a week. Sterling is currently a long, long way off that kind of level.

The refs are really the very least of our problems. We're currently not very good. The focus on the refs is uncomfortably close to Everton style ifithadntbeenfor.

We need a reliable finisher so badly. Someone at Hernandez's level would make a massive difference to us.
