Phil Babb is a great shout. Thought he would be outstanding for us. Another who I thought would be a star was Litmanen but he was hugely disappointing, for whatever reason, as well. ...and I can't believe I just posted my 1,000th post and it was slagging Jari. s****

Great news Leo. I think you've hit the nail on the head there. We know Gerrard is world class on the right, so bringing Pennant in at a reasonable price would make a lot more sense than splashing the cash on a Joaquin or Simao.

Wasn't this the era of the foreigner rule in Europe, where teams could only field three non English players. I think this contributed to Souness deciding to sell a lot of decent players such as Staunton and Houghton. It still doesn't excuse the mess he made of the overall job but he was put in an awkward position because of that rule.

Sky sports were reporting this morning that Roeder will be doing his coaching badges this summer, with the implication that the job was his if he wants it. Maybe Ged is coming in as director of football.

I never said he wasn't a very good player. All I was pointing out was that he hadn't played well in the qualifiers. England scored 17 goals and he scored none. For a forward/striker that is a poor return.

Rooney does not play the Dalglish role for England. He is there to score and, admittedly to a lesser extent, create goals. To this end he has, in my opinion, failed in the qualifying games.
