I was under the impression we (including Gray) were simply referring to the lineup for the last part of the game when it was apparent that our strikers weren't having much joy and Gerrard seemed ineffective on the right. In other words instead of bringing Hamann on, why not make some kind of change that meant that Gerrard could play through the middle? We could be here all day discussing who plays on the left if Kewell shifts to the right, Cisse plays too far forward, etc...etc...etc... I agree the starting line up should have been as it was. The point is, by the time of the latter stages of the game Rafa did know Pires and Ljungbeg were not having their best game, and he had several options to get Stevie down the middle, but chose to send Hamann on, and leave Stevie out right. As it turns out, bringing Hamann on was yet another masterstroke by Rafa, but at the time none of us knew that and all I'm actually trying to say that Gray's point about why not try Stevie down the middle wasn't completely insane, surely? Hindsight's great though, and Gray's a c*ck, so let's never play Stevie down the middle ever again eh? Can't have Andy Gray being right, can we?
