Yeah it's looking suspect now. Tell him to sign up or leave this summer. If he won't, sign a replacement and tell him he'll only be playing if there's an outbreak of Norovirus.

Or not mention the money at all? Let's be straight about where we are on transfers as a club though - every year we seem slow, miss out on targets because we won't pay the money, and then see loads of articles stating that the club don't want to block Joe Bloggs' route to the 1st team. This year we can add in that we've had to spend big retaining Virgil and Mo, 'who are being viewed as 2 huge signings as they were expected to leave'. Set against this we always have a few posters who do the old 'be patient, it's only May/June/ July/August/, well we won the league last year so we'll be fine. Now who knows, maybe this year will be different. But it's still a tiresome dance that we've had years of.

Why let him go early to help Madrid win a trophy? We don't have to put him in the match squads for the remainder if we'd prefer him not to be involved, but I'd make him stick around till 23:59 on the 30th June.
