He's meant to be a real intelligent guy and student of the game.

I'd love him back, especially after what hid did for the younger players in istanbul. Shame that.

Has to be said he was rubbish playing for us though.

What did he do?

Went into the milan dressing room after the game, got there runners up medals out of the bin and gave them to our youngsters.

OH SAMMY SAMMY, SAMMY SAMMY SAMMY SAMMY SAMMY LEE!

Actually there should be a fair few ex-red candidates around who have coaching experience and are available.

Steve McMahon, Jan Molby and Aldo spring to mind

He was great against the Bitters.

He was a crap player for us but I guess Rafa's desire to bring him back backs up the idea that Pellegrino did a lot of good off the field work, zonal marking and all that

Saw Pellegrino at Speke airport the morning of the CL Final - obviously he didnlt fly out with the squad.

Asked him if he'd enjoyed his time at Liverpool and he said 'no'! Don't know if something was lost in translation, he was taking the piss, or simply referring to his form though!

Be fair - he was on a free at the butt end of his career in a new team, in a new league, in a new country for six months only, hardly having kicked a ball in anger in the previous six - and he did have a few decent games, most importantly - allowing Sami a break which helped us get Big Ears Mk 5.

That they are ex reds is neither here nor there - that they can fit in and know enough to work within Rafa's total game plan is. This is the sort of position that Rafa has to have absolute say about and trust in. It would actually probably be better if the guy knows more about Rafa and his system and sod all about LFC rather than the other way around.

Don't know why Sammy Lee left, it seemed at the time Rafa wanted him to stay and his excuse (to concentrate on his Engerland role) was bull as he then joined Bolton within months.

I beleive his experience of the English league would have been invaluable to Rafa in his first year here as he got used to the English style and misjudgements like everton away and burnley might have been avoided. However, Rafa seems to have got the hang of it now, so he can rot at Bolton.

It looked like he was gently fired to me.

I got the impression he was offered a position here, but it was a demotion from the roll he had in the back room team with GH.

I wonder if Sammy has learnt all sorts of bad habits from working for Fat Sam and Eriksson, maybe we should leave well alone :o:D

Reading about Pellegrino in the Rafa Benitez biography it describes him as a "model professional" and basically as one of the corner stones of the Valencia team. I seem to remember it saying that Pellegrino was the person who ensured Rafa's instructions were carried out on the pitch, but I may have imagined that bit!

He is clearly someone Rafa can trust and it is just a shame it was his pace that let him down in the PL, I think he would make a good coach though.

I would welcome Pellislowo in a coaching capacity.

I thought Sammy Lee left because we wouldn't release him for his England post

Apparently he took control right away in his first training session. Shouting, giving out instructions and taking the lead.

Sounds like a top lad for what I've read and heard. Great what he did with them medals in Istanbul.

He sounds like a great asset to have on the training pitch and have among the young lads.

Like Gary Mac, it would be nice to seem him back at Liverpool sometime in the future.

Sammy Interview ......

Your departure came as a big surprise to many Liverpudlians; can you explain your reasons for leaving?

I had been invited to stay and I fully appreciated that. What I also appreciated though was that Rafa had to bring his own staff in. This was perfectly understandable. I've got nothing but the utmost respect for Rafael Benitez and the club. But having been a major part of what Gerard Houllier was trying to implement and achieve, during the bad times and the good, I just felt that it was best I also went, just as he and Phil had gone. To have stayed after they'd left maybe I'd have lost some credibility.

Given your love of the Reds how difficult a decision was it?

It was a massively difficult decision. All my family and friends are from Liverpool and I'd been there such a long time. I absolutely loved the place but I had to do what I had to. I had a couple of options on the table and I chose to work with the FA for two reasons. One because it is a great association and two, I thought it would be wrong of me to stay in club football after being invited to stay at Anfield. It was a tremendous wrench but I'd been through it before as a player.

Would you say it was one of the hardest decisions you've ever had to make?

Yes, for sure. I've had two – one when I left as a player in 1986 and this as a coach in 2004. They weren't easy decisions to make at all, I can guarantee you that.
