Emlyn Hughes

He made his debut for Blackpool in May 1966, aged 18, and supposedly Shankly was actually there to witness this and immediately tried to sign him for Liverpool.

 

But according to an interview I saw with Hughes over 20 years ago, he was marking some well-known England international in that match and basically kicked hell out of him all afternoon.

 

Question is: who was that England international he was marking?

"As a tough, keen, bustling 18 year old full back he came to prominence at Bloomfield Road when playing regularly in the Central League side in the 1965/66 season and these performances earned him League debut in the final game of the1965/66 season against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on 2 May 1966 when manager Ron Suart said, ?Emlyn has been a regular and fast-improving member of the reserve side all season and merits a game in the first team.? In the 38th minute of the game he was involved in the controversial sending off of George Jones. He was thereafter ?the number one target for terracing barrackers? but he said after the match, ?I enjoyed the game tremendously? as Blackpool won 3-1. The story goes that, Bill Shankly tried to sign him for Liverpool and put in a £20,000 offer right after the game (nine months later, Shankly got his man for £65,000) but the offer was rejected."

Funnily enough I saw Emlyn play one of his first games for Blackpool but lived in Banbury at that time.I'd been watching the local team play Port Vale res. Jackie Mudie (old Blackpool player) was involved with Port Vale and I met him in the clubrooms afterwards. I had no idea that Shanks was already after Hughes but commented to Mudie that I'd seen this young lad Hughes and was really impressed. He agreed and said he wont be at Blackpool much longer. A couple of days later came the announcement !

According to records, Bryan Douglas and Keith Newton were the only Blackburn players playing for England in the 60's. Newton was a full back so Douglas might have been the man as he was an old Outside Right.

I think it must have been Brian Douglas.

 

In the interview Hughes say the player (Douglas presumably) had been a total gentleman and shook his hand and wished him all the best for his career, despite Hughes kicking him continually during the game.

 

In was part-and-parcel of the game Brian, in those days, of course
