Alonso, Garcia & Morientes

Alonso was awesome today physically. He sat in front of the back four and won every battle that came his way, releasing Gerrard.

That's the biggest thing that's impressed me about Alonso this year. With such a delicate touch on the ball it could be assumed that he was a shrinking violet - certainly not!

Alonso and Gerrard are unmatched as a pair in European club football at the moment.

I thought Alonso's passing was as wayward as I'd ever seen. Seems to me like he converted about 70% of his passes which is pretty poor by his standards.

But still, such a brilliant passer he is, that on a mediocre day he can still come up with a perfectly weighted 50 yard ball.

I like the way he hit Cisse with that knee high driven pass which DC took in his stride delightfully but blazed over once in the box.

What Rafa has brought to Liverpool is a superb balance of hard work and skill. For some reason Houllier only had players that could either play or graft. In Alonso, LG and Morientes, we have players who will work all day, fight for the ball, and when in possession are actually magical players.

That's a rarity.

Moro especially had a very hard time adjusting to the physical aspect of the Premiership. You could clearly see his frustration after each tackle, or due to the lack of time he got on the ball.

To his credit, he never gave up, and has lately started to show that he has finally come to terms with the English game. As they say, his class has shone through.

Yep. There was a lot written after Kaka murdered them that it couldn't work. It has worked and done so repeatedly this season. I wouldn't put the pair of them in against Chelsea or anything but they are the most complete two in Europe without any shadow of a doubt.

they're probably the best two in the premiership. and our two most valuable. but yesterday they were up against the twin force of n'zogbia and faye. once they've over-run emerson and viera in the same way i'll join in the backslapping. we haven't even seen them regularily dominate midfields away from home as yet.

Chill out George. They'll never get the chance against Emerson and Vieira as a pair. The sort of games which they should dominate they are and it's the first time in a long time you can say that about our midfield. Horses for courses.

A silly chant to honour them.

To the tune of Bonanza...

alonso, alonso, xabi alonso

Alonso and Gerrard partnership is world class. Compare them with any midfield partnership in Europe and you ll find they are second to none, not even to Emerson/Viera combination. Our Central mid is one department i am very chuffed with. Sissoko and Hamann provide very good cover too.

We only need to add last bits to the jigsaw i.e. good cover for the CD position, and i wish for a right footed Robben to arrive from somewhere. Thats all i want from the January transfer window so i wish rafa luck and financial backing in next month s transfer window.

Other additions like proper cover for LB, RB and striker and perhaps another LW can calmly be made next summer.

Most commentators will speak about Xabi's fine range of passing , but many don't notivce his workrate. He is never more than 5 yards away for a pass and his tackling back is sublime. If he could get his shooting boots on he would be the most complete midfielder in the country. He can completely dominate games from a deep position where the likes of Gerrard and Lampard at at their best going forward. Moro is very clever and a great pro. You can see he is really getting into playing for this team. It is only a matter of time before we see him scoring a bagfull of goals to go along with his great link up play. I see him more as a Dalglish-type rather than an out and out striker.

I saw Raul being shepherded into the Executive and Officials doors half an hour before kick off. If Nando hadn't have been looking the business over the past few weeks I'd have suggested he was just putting in the extra effort to impress his bessie mate ;):).

Morientes is getting better and better. His work rate is impressive and his touch and vision is doing wonders for our attacking play. His first half yesterday was the best football he's played in the red shirt. And I include Monaco's red shirt in that.

if we played juve then i think Juve would just go in with those two but we'd play either hamann and sissoko as well and win.

Agreed mate. (Happy Chrissy by the way)

There has been a great deal written about Ged bringing in the French and Rafa bringing in the Spanish, I have to say I know who I prefer ;)
