MOTD just quoted 48 players that have gone from Arsenal's academy to the first team.

Just curious - when was our academy set up, and how many players have come through?

Suspect Arsenal's 48 include a lot of Fabregases and the like - from other teams

How many have Arsenal actually produced themselves? Wilshire?

Yeah, I suspect the 48 is a bulls*** statistic - nicking a 16 year old Fabregas from Barca and sticking him in the academy from six months shouldn't count.

But I'm curious about ours, and how many - we could probably count the likes of Insua, but we have plenty of genuine ones.

They said 48 had played in the first team - in which case we can include the likes of darren potter in any count of ours. Its a stupid stat to make a fuss over - its no indication of quality and as others have said most of arsenals were bought in aged 15 or 16

Posted

And they've used theirs in the Carling Cup - many have disappeared.

Pointless stat but they have brought through some cracking youngsters, bought or not. But have they had a Fowler or Owen?

Stuff like this really winds me up. They haven't produced any of their own. They've just poached a s***load from other teams.

A model all the other top clubs are copying. Including us.

I know, but because it's Arsenal, the media have their usual w***fest over them.

And how many over the years have broke through? Can't think of that many of their current ones that I would want here apart from Wilshere.

Ashley Cole is another but even he was not expected to make it with wenger sending him on loan with intent to sell.

Also, looking at the arsenal kids, how many would you actually want? I don't see any that I think, yep want him.

They are a team with no soul. Lucky for them they have wilshire. Once wenger goes I can see it all collapsing. There is no loyalty or culture.

Wenger is the one dragging them down. A new manager would spend.

Taken from an arsenal site. cant be arsed to format it.

They've done ok, but I reckon that there are other teams who have had far greater success in that area

so players that turned into 'good players for a top club' amongst that lot are Cole and Fabregas, and probably Wilshere. 3 players and Cole was back in 1999

Since then we have produced a number of players who have gone on to play for other PL clubs but how many would you class as being good enough for a top club in that time? Owen, Carragher are eons ago as is Gerrard, maybe Kelly & Spearing are the best of the bunch in recent years potentially along with our 2 young full backs Flannagan and Robinson, or am I forgetting someone? Danny Ayala may yet make it at PL level but beyond that I'm struggling to think of others. Just like the Arsenal list, there are a lot of so-so performers in there who might have a steady career in the Championship or League 1...

Difference is Arsenal have been able to supplement their squad with academy products, whereas we've had to fill it with wage chuggers like Degen and Poulsen. A lot of teams follow a similar model to what Arsenal use: Ajax, Palermo (to a certain extent) and Udinese being good examples, but they do it to make a profit on the players and to remain sustainable, whereas Wenger thinks that he can win titles with it. Sadly for them, they're not the only club with a good scouting network, academy and that play pretty football anymore. Just being able to fill the squad with young lads will make a big difference to our ability to compete at the top end, and as such can see 4/5 of the current generation making the step up.

The whole reason United have been able to remain so succesful is their ability to have a strong squad filled with players who can do their job. Flanagan et al are players who can do the same for us.
