New Deal for Darby

Recommended Posts

Skysports.com understands Liverpool have opened talks with Stephen Darby over a new deal at Anfield.

Darby is highly-rated within the corridors of Anfield and the club are ready to reward him with a new long-term contract, with his current deal having just over a year to run.

The full-back has progressed through the Liverpool ranks and was a member of the 2006 and 2007 FA Youth Cup-winning sides.

Darby made the breakthrough into the first team this season and he has so far made two substitute appearances in the Carling Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is a big admirer of the 20-year-old and is hoping to thrash out a deal with the defender in the near future.

I can't see the point of extending a 20 year old's contract unless he is going to be considered first team next season. Either he is good enough to cover Arbeloa and play when Arbeloa doesn't, or he isn't good enough for Liverpool and should be moved on.
