England's number 1?

Flapped an elbow letting Kuyt score and reacted way too slowly for Torres

Ironic if the win starts us off on a really good run....

Not sure he could have done that much about either goals tbh.

Kuyt smashed that ball at him, and Torres got unbelievable power on that header. You can be critical of James overall game but his shot stopping has always been his strongest asset

I'm sure a few hours on his stupid f***ing playstation will make him feel better.

I wondered if oe of the two replies would have been from you...

Was partly at fault for all three goals. No keeper should ever be beaten on his near post from the position Kuyt was in.

Disagree. The pace beat him.

Like Drogba against us in the semi final second leg last year.

Only concerning your two favourite ex-reds.

Has the 8 ball been retired?

The 8 ball has a bit of a problem. Over the years bubbles have collected inside it and now they sort of obscure the answers when you ask it a question.

Its a sad tale.

was fuming that he wasn't sent off for handling the back pass, he denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, glad with his efforts towards the end that he stayed on though!!

Still can't stand the bloke, single handedly cost us the league in 96-97

Torres' header was past him before he got his hand on it, i thought he might have done better with Kuyts but it was very accurate and hit very hard.

Still haven't forgiven him myself..

God I despise him!

Its his strongest asset but its not all that to be honest, I can think of many goals that he let in for us from shots that he should (ferdinand in the first 4-3 win against newcastle for one, and a few others that he just let slip under his body)

I think Gillespie had a soft one against him in the second 4-3 game against Newcastle.

yes!

It bugs me a bit when the likes of him, Robinson, Carson are labeled as great shot stoppers!, when they are clearly not (although to be fair to James he is better than the other two)

It annoys me that shot-stopping is considered the be-all of goalkeeping, and if you aren't called to do that 100 times a game, you're clearly a crap keeper. It's keepers like Reina who make it look so easy that never get the plaudits, because they cut out danger a lot of the time before the need for a flying one-handed save.

Then you get twonks like Burley trying to blame Pepe for not stopping a ball headed from 5yds out.

I love Reina and think he is the equal of any keeper in the world but he should have saved that from Hreidarrson. His reaction to it showed he thought he should have stopped it too. It was a poor goal to concede.

I thought it was a very hard header to stop, with the speed and loop on the ball in the first place, you're going to get so little time to react that if the resulting header is not straight at you, it's very hard to make the diving save. I think Pepe was more annoyed that it was so near him he should have reacted, but I think it left him very little time to re-adjust his footing and position. Carra should have picked up Hreidarrson better TBH.

He was at fault for most of the goals in that second match, he completely fell apart before our eyes, you knew once the first one went in, the second and third were invetiable.

You can say he was beaten by the pace by Kuyt's shot, or you can say his reactions were too slow, two sides of the same coin

Yep, It was Reina's mistake. Fortunately, he doesn't make many, and when he does they don't seem to affect him for long.

Reina should have saved it, but he recovers quickly from mistakes and they are few and far between. The mark of a top keeper.

Anyway, any goalkeeper playing in the Premier League should be an excellent shot stopper. It's positioning, handling of crosses, ability to think quickly, concentration and command of your box that sets you apart from the mediocrity. This is where Pepe excels. He can do nothing all game, but will be in a great position to take a shot with ease (other goalkeepers would be diving to finger-tip it away ala Carson), he'll run to the edge of the area and start a counter attack. Most would be giving away a corner by virtue of not being in the right position to begin with.
