Liverpool will launch their bid to bring Emile Heskey back to Anfield next Thursday.

The Merseyside club will offer a ‘take it or leave it’ fee of £4million for the England striker when the transfer window opens on January 1.

Manager Rafa Benitez wants cover for his strikers, and also the problem right-wing berth, and sees Heskey as the perfect cut-price option.

Liverpool have little or no money to spend in the transfer window, but Heskey is out of contract in the summer and Wigan will reluctantly cash in now to ensure they don’t lose him for nothing.

Manager Steve Bruce has spoken of demanding a big fee for the striker but the reality is that he has hardly played for Wigan this season, and the Latics boss will take what he can get to fund some of the fee required to make Amir Zaki's a permanent move.

Liverpool will face competition from Aston Villa for the striker's services, but Heskey has already indicated that he wants to go back to Anfield to rejoin the club he supported as a boy.

If the Merseyside club can get Heskey for £4m then a deal is a real possibility because they haven't given up hope of recouping that figure by shipping Jermaine Pennant out in the transfer window.

I'd sign him for a reasonable fee.

We certainly need another striker who can lead the line. Particularly with the absence of Torres.

Thats who we need.

Heskey? Why not get Nunez back to solve our right wing issues as well.

Sell Benayoun, Keane, Pennant and Dossena, and buy back Owen and Heskey and somebody else good who once played for us.

Rafa's reportedly "obsessed" with recreating the Houllier 03-04 Squad.

It's his stubborn streak again - he's determined to prove he could've done better with that squad than Houllier.

Theres been a rumour about Glen Johnson having already signed according to some Portsmouth fans, they reckon thats why he hasn't played recently.

Don't see it myself although he has developed into a pretty good attacking right back, maybe if Dosenna goes we could use Arbeloa as an option for left back too rather than having to sign somebody else if we bring a right back in?

Really ? Now for a f*ck all fee that would be a genuinely interesting signing.
