A player is fouled out by the touchline and the linesman flags for a freekick. The ball trickled through to a defender after the 'foul' and he picks up the ball (inside the box) to throw it to the team that got the free kick.

However, the ref never actually awarded the free that the linesman flagged for and immediately pointed to the spot when the guy picks up the ball.

I'd have murderous tendancies if I was a fan in that stadium

For the ref or the idiot player? 'kinell, imagine if that was Riise!

The way the player knocks it into the penalty area looks suspicious to me.

Nothing wrong with that. Ref waves on after "foul".

Correct, the linesman flagged for a foul, the referee overruled him and clearly waves play on.

Deliberate handball like that is a red card offence, no?

Would have been even more hilarious if the ref had sent him off.

And then his team mates had lined up to slap him about, like in that scene from Airplane!

I wonder what the deal is with some of these Ref's so many obvious mistakes makes you wonder sometimes anyway...

Surely given the farcical decisions made over the weekend the time now has come to allow a challenge system or third umpire or some kind of review process to enter the game. Each team could have 1 challange per half and retain the challenge if the Ref is shown to have been inaccurate in his decision or lose it if the Ref is shown to be correct, much like the system Pro Tennis is using to great effect.

I appreciate there will be delays in the game however I think the fans want to see the right decisions being made and would accept the delays with minimal fuss in the name of better more consistent officiating.

The annoying thing is that the technology is available which can drastically reduce the frequency of these incidents.

I am a big believer in the benefits of applying new technology into football. If anybody wants a demonstration of it's benefits, just watch a big rugby union game. The ref (apart from playing a sensible 'advantage' rule) has the benefit of a video ref. Desite what everybody says it DOESN'T lead to unnecessary delays, everybody accepts the verdict, and justice is done. However it is the REFEREE who decides it's use, not crowds of angry players surrounding him (but that's an entirely different topic).

Rugby has natural breaks where the technology can be used. If it was used in football, it would have a big effect on the duration of the game. Indeed, I reckon it would be used as a way of breaking up the play - such things often have counter-productive unintended consequences like that.

Nevertheless, I reckon they should use video review to apply and rescind yellow and red cards - especially for 'diving': I think that's about the only way to stamp that out.

And maybe using cameras to decide on the specific issue of whether the ball crossed the goal line is a good use of technology. It's a relatively rare occurrence so it wouldn't slow the game down significantly.

Don't agree it is any more natural than footie. And to be honest the chance of a video ref incident in footie is far less than Rugby. For the sake of a brief interruption the chances of correct decisions increase a lot.

I wouldn't like to see technology used as the game has been going on for well over 100 years and these type of incidents have always happened, they are only highlighted more now because of the amount of tv coverage available. Fans have been ranting about the ref's decisions for years, why try and sanitise football even more, it actually fues a bit of passion about footie which isn't a bad thing.

The game is already broken up with players diving and rolling around every five minutes. We have the technology and it's easy to use. It would be no problem for a referee to immediately get a first hand visual replay of any incident if he wanted.

It's not as bad as that - nevertheless this IS one area where I think technology can be used very effectively without disrupting the game: if players knew their diving and faking of injuries was probably going to result in (e.g.) a 3-match ban when it's assessed on a post-game video review, then it would stamp it out of the game almost completely.
