Cooger Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Would Taggert av kept 4 defenders on the field for 90 mins I don't see what good putting another attacking player on the field for a defender would have done. Stoke were defending deep, narrow and with their whole team. The box was packed, giving little space for Torres and Keane. Playing three at the back, looking to get another attacking player, I don't think would have aided our cause. The outlet was Arbeloa and Dossena or Riera and Kuyt out wide. These four players had lots of possession and in my opinion I don't think they created enough really. The full backs were bombing forward, they had the space and I don't see why playing three at the back, making the team more narrow would have done any good. How was he allowed to only have 2 forward thinking subs out of 7 available The two forward thinking players came on. We were playing Stoke and with Torres, Gerrard, Keane, Babel, Riera, Benayoun, Alonso etc on the field we had enough quality to win. I'm not sure another few attacking options would make much difference. You can only use three subs you know. and how did he get away with taking off 2 forward thinking players Bringing on two forward thinking players. I think you are being ultra critical. I think Benitez got his tactics pretty much spot on. The only debatable decision was whether Babel should have played or come on instead of Kuyt.

psl Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Did Stoke keep two up front throughout the match?
Sion Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Did Stoke keep two up front throughout the match? I think so, that's if you can call hardly passing the half way line 'up front'

A far more measured and rational response than the intial post merited. Edited September 21, 2008 by kop205
carrafan Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 (edited) I thought we missed a physical player like Crouch yesterday. However big their defenders were, you'd always half expect him to win his fair share of headers. It might have been right off Mourinho's textbook but i was wondering why Skrtel wasnt brought upfront just be that physical specimen in the last 5-10 minutes. It would have given Stoke a new thing to worry about. Dont think our wide players ran enough at the defenders to try and get themselves into the box, with the ball either. Benayoun tried that when he was subbed on and almost got through. So did Gerrard a couple of times but apart from that i thought our wide players were a bit lazy and took the easier route of crossing the ball way too often, without mixing it up. But hindsight is a wonderful thing and maybe them coming inside would have only meant that the box would've got more crowded. We'll see a lot of teams try this tactic of defending deep in numbers against us now that we've lost Crouchie and it'll be upto us to get the results. An early goal would've counted a lot yesterday. They only got more confident as time went on and were hardly chasing the ball in midfield meaning that they never got tired. Is N'gog supposed to be good in the air? Rory Fitzgerald Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 I thought we really tried to work the wide areas yesterday but the high crosses into the box were easily cut out by Stoke, with the exception of Torres's header. However, when we worked the ball into good areas and hit low crosses, we appeared to cause more trouble. I couldnt understand why we kept whipping in high balls - with the exception of corners, because Gerrard seemed determined to knee cap the Stoke players with the corners he was taking

Cam Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 An out-and-out forward on the bench was an obvious miss. Okay, we had 3 on the pitch plus the aforementioned 'forward thinkers' and Gerrard so some adapting could have been done. But a 'Mellor-style impact' would have been ideal.
Bigal Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Who is Taggert ???? call yourself a LFC fan, just how long you been going the game mate 24 years lad, never heard anyone call ferguson taggert. infact, i heard it when leicester played at anfield a few times
Rory Fitzgerald Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 An out-and-out forward on the bench was an obvious miss. We dont have one. I'm assuming Ngog was injured not to be in the list of 7 - other than that there are only the ressies
