WillG Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 After every half-decent performance by a player during the Euro's there's been a senseless clamour on here for Rafa to sign the latest flavour of the day. Question... how many of you would have been begging for him to sign that Spanish lad Torres based purely on his performance of the last four games? Truthfully now!! My point is that top class managers don't buy players on the basis of a golden summer, and we shouldn't be surprised/too critical when someone unexpected turns up in the next few weeks, as our signings definitely won't be based on the BBC gossip page.
libero Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 IMHO Torres was mince tonight. He never got much service, granted but still was mince.Whole game was crap.
Guest spk Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 arrogones has compltely misused him. whether its becuase his management skills are lacking or its down to his well publicised negativitiy towards spanish plays that ply their trade outside espana i doubt we'll ever know.
KD07 Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Is mince good or bad ? It's like minge, only in slices.
fyds Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 (edited) It's like minge, only in slices.Either you have a very different understanding of what 'minge' is or are Hannibal Lector and I claim my £5. The Italians sat on him. Inter had seen what he could do and so there game plan was on negating him and the whole Spanish attack while hoping against hope to snatch one on a break. It was like watching Wimbledon at times. Glad the Spanish lads won - Italy should have already been out in my book. Edited June 23, 2008 by fyds
growler Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 on the other hand, we never would have signed Diomede, Cheyrou, Nunez
fyds Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 on the other hand, we never would have signed Diomede, Cheyrou, NunezDiomede sat on the bench for the world cup to the point it was a joke - he was signed as Houllier had him as a known quantity, Nunez was part of the Owen deal as a makeweight (we wanted a different makeweight) - we hadn't seen him in a championship and Cheyrou was only an occasional bit part player for France - his 'appeal' was based on good club and CL performances.
Ginu Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 When you see a player like Arshavin in this tournament, and see what he did for ZSP in the Uefa Cup, this kid is gold.
cymrococh Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Diomede sat on the bench for the world cup to the point it was a joke - .except when he started 3 games.
mooks Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Question... how many of you would have been begging for him to sign that Spanish lad Torres based purely on his performance of the last four games? Truthfully now!!I think Torres has looked tired since March. He is the last of our players I wanted to play till the end of June. Luis Enrique actually said before the game: "I hope David Villa gets revenge against Italy". I think we will have to rotate Torres a fair bit next season. edit: Apparently Enrique was specifically asked about Villa except when he started 3 games.fyds never lets the facts get in the way of his arguments
floyd Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I think we will have to rotate Torres a fair bit next season.Keys and Gray would explode.
Alonso Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Maybe one of the reasons Torres hasn't been as effective for Spain as he is for us is cos he likes the ball early. He makes runs into channels and off the shoulder of the last defender. If he doesn't get the ball then he has to re adjust and start over. As he's our main focus in attack we look to go to him early as he makes those runs. Spain have a much more considered build up knocking it round the middle 3rd and especially last night due to the way the Italians played. Premiership football is a lot quicker and more direct than International footie which suits Torres more.
fred Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Keys and Gray would explode. So will this board if god forbid we should draw or lose a game he hasn't played in
WillG Posted June 23, 2008 Author Posted June 23, 2008 It's like minge, only in slices. BTW - No one has answered the question - would anyone have wanted Torres, solely on his Euro 08 performances?
Rich Gobey Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 BTW - No one has answered the question - would anyone have wanted Torres, solely on his Euro 08 performances? I would, his physical strength and pace looked awesome at times, Spain have an embarrassement of attacking riches, it's up to them how they utilise Torres.
Skillz Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 BTW - No one has answered the question - would anyone have wanted Torres, solely on his Euro 08 performances? No offense but i couldn't care, he's ours and that's all that matters. You make a good point though. I am (as I suspect you are) sick to death of reading posts like "If Rafa doesnt sign *insert name of player who excelled in game just played* I will hunt the prick down and lamp him" or the like.
Foo Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Yes, by God. I wouldn't have believed we got him as we seem to get more s**** players than good ones.... It seems anyway...
Archangel Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 (edited) When you see a player like Arshavin in this tournament, and see what he did for ZSP in the Uefa Cup, this kid is gold. careful though, for every andrei arshavin there's a salif diao Edited June 23, 2008 by Archangel
mooks Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 careful though, for every andrei arshavin there's a salif diao Yes but Andrei Arshavin is an Arshavin and Salif Diao is a Salif Diao. If you know what I mean
San Diego Red Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) Arshavin is 27 years old. He's got 2 years at best to shine as he is doing now. Excessive w***ing. Ridiculous. Edited June 24, 2008 by Vorokin'
Stevie H Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Arshavin is 27 years old. He's got 2 years at best to shine as he is doing now. Excessive w***ing. Ridiculous.why? what will happen when he is 29? will he keel over and expire or something?
Anfield Fox Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 or its down to his well publicised negativitiy towards spanish plays that ply their trade outside espana i doubt we'll ever know. I've read that from a few people. Sorry but i just don't buy it at all. He took over as manager of Spain at the same time as Rafa came to us. In that time i believe he has called up every one of our Spanish players to the squad with the exception of Josemi. We have 4 Liverpool players in their Euro 2008 squad. That's more than either Real Madrid or Barca! No one can fault him for having Pepe as number 2. Arbeloa only broke into the Spanish squad since coming to Anfield, Torres has started every game and Xabi has won 45 caps since 2003, the majority since moving here in 2004. If anything he has been great in encouraging other Spanish players to come to Liverpool as he has proven it won't affect their International place as some feared when Xabi and Morientes came.
Walrus Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Agreed. It's quite funny reading all the comments about how Aragones was wrong to take off Torres, and how it's unbelievable he doesn't play Xabi more or that he should've brought Pepe on for the penalty shootout It's not like people are biased or anything...

Oh, no, they're objective and they know better than Aragones, Rafa, or any manager with the exception of Mourinho
