With the rumours swirling about Xabi being on the way, and personally, me being underwhelmed with the possibility of replacing him with Barry, could we excel next season with a centre midfield crew of Stevie, Marscher, Lucas and Plessis/Guthrie?

The possible 15 million that has been mentioned to go on Barry could be spent elsewhere, Maybe towards another striker, or someone like Alves.

You only find out that young players are good, if you throw them in.

Where would Wenger be if he hadnt given his kids a chance to play? Plessis might not be very good to begin with (he was immense at Arsenal) but he'd learn as he went and get better over the course of time. But the only way he'll improve is by being tested at a higher level than reserve team football.

I firmly believe that if you have faith in the player, the 'sink or swim' theory can apply.

Throw him in and see. I'd do the same with Nemeth too, few games here and there and see how he gets on.

Guthrie is a definite no - Plessis - against some teams yes...very difficult to say...he's not far away...if he has a good summer with the first team, then maybe - just maybe.

I wouldn't want to rely on Lucas too much, never mind those two.

Agreed. I still hope that Lucas will come good, but I wouldn't want to start the season with just Gerrard, Mascherano and Lucas as our main central midfielders, especially as Gerrard plays more forward in our new formation. If Alonso goes, we definitely need another CM.

That's a no. Lucas can't be relied upon as first choice at this point.

Bolton fans are not sure about Guthre them selves, they don't think he is worth £1m!

Bolton fans are tight, he's good guthrie but maybe not liverpool level as for plessis he needs a right foot before he makes the step up.

Surely if we were to play with one striker next season, Nemeth would do as 4th choice? Torres, New BIG signing, Status Quo-lookalike (rather see someone else), Nemeth?

That wouldn't be to much pressure on the lad?

Why not? Lucas had played a number of games this season including some big game.

If Plessis can do no mistakes against Arsenal players, why cant we confident in him playing against other PL teams?

Kind of agree with Ivan here, Guthrie will probably take another loan season. Plessis on the other hand has shown, in spurts, that he does have potential and thus could be given a run in the squad for certain games.

As for the money, I also agree that it should be spent in a more attacking area. Defensively we are covered with a number of people including Insua coming in from the reserves. An strong attacking, creative midfielder of another quality striker (Villa/Huntelaar) perhaps, should be priority here. Barry offers options but I dont think he will be enough to bridge the gap btween us and the top 2 in the league.

I know he did well down at the emirates, but i dont think he is right up to it yet.

I think he is at about the same level as wengers carling cup kids at the moment i reckon.

Am I the only one (who watches the reserves regularly) and thinks Spearing is a better player than Plessis?

I think he's a better player, but Plessis is less of a risk. Spearing can play as a defensive midfielder but his position is more like Gerrard's. Plessis can come into the team and keep it simple, break up play and be good positionally, he's a bit more mature as a player. I think that's why he was the first of this reserve squad to get a go this season.

Plessis looked good against Arsenal in the league.

Still very raw. Reminds me of Sissoko but probably better with the ball and less strong.
