It was on Tribal, not the greatest source I'll admit. But they are saying that we are interested in the both of them. Supposedly we made contact with Werder last week about Diego and they are talking about Santa Cruz for 7 million.

I was wondering if anyone had heard that from anywhere else. I'm asking because they really seem to be great fits for us.

Santa Cruz has really taken well to the Premiership, which surprised me as he had a terrible goal scoring record for Bayern.

I think Hughes is just able to get the best out of his strikers. Bellamy was a revalation there and McCarthy is fantastic too.

McCarthy has had a really poor season so far.

Santa Cruz strikes me as one of thos players we would sign after a great first season in England and would immediately revert back to being rubbish once he pulls a Liverpool shirt on.

Well he has got what 5-6 goals so far this season? Its not that bad. Okay to be fair, he did really well in his first season though.

Oh he had a terrific first season. Didn't get anywhere near the credit he deserved, as everyone fell over themselves to praise Berbatov (admittedly a very good player).

I agree with that. And often a striker who is the main threat for a decent top 10 side suddenly looks v out of depth at a top 4 side.

As for Diego. I'm just worried that he'd get squished playing in the PL. He makes Smicer look like a giant.

Cole can't hold down a regular place at Chelsea so why would we want him? He's a player who flatters to deceive, he lacks pace and is about as consistent as our current crop of wingers.

I think Mourinho did that, he works very hard now. I'd love to sign him, don't think it'll happen though.

To an extent. He certainly improved his work rate while under Mourinho but theres been games even this season on more than one occasion i've seen him give the ball away under no pressure and then make no attempt to win it back (cueing groans from Chelsea fans in ground and pub). He's a really good little player though, one of those b******s that is very hard to tackle with a low center of gravity. He's also very good in tight spaces - something a LOT of our players aren't good at at the moment. You can tell a good player when you get nervey when you see him getting the ball against you and I certainly do that when Cole's in full flow.

I think our winger problems are quite large. Getting a player that can't hold a regular place at Chelsea shouldn't be the biggest of our concerns at the moment. Right now we're chasing the top 4.

Finally a realist on the forum

Diego sounds promising

The problem is this: It's easier playing for a mid table team than the top 4. The expectancy and the time to settle are completely different

Rotation and high expectancy would destroy someone with fragile confidence or competence.

You are best either getting these players very young and brining them up in the club ( ala Arsenal) or buying the very best (ala Man U)

Bargains are to be found, but we are not likely to buy a championship (or lower ) player and have them be a success at Liverpool anymore

they just wouldnt get the time

Liverpool expects every man to do his duty !

He would stroll into our side. On the right, left, whichever, far better than what we have.

Although looking at this he doesn't seem to be getting much criticism if he's on the same level as the likes of Kewell as you say.

Diego has infinitely more talent than the two of those players combined.

Traore has infinitely more talent than the two of those players combined.

Diego is a good player, I would prefer VDV but he will probably be too expensive

Not necessarily. I read an article that suggested VDV had a buyout clause that actived in summer 2009 of €1. It would mean he'd be effectively going on a free next summer.

So there may be an opportunity for us to get him at a reasonable price. I suspect he'll end up at Juventus though.
