Guest GrandpaSimpson Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Did it? He was awful in the first half, 2nd half had nothing to do, but he's obviously not a centre back. Dont think he's all that as a full back either but a decent squad player. Any reason Hobbs wasnt picked? Was he injured?
CaptainXabi Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I think he's a good fullback but I needed about 5 pair of pants in the first 30 minutes. How he/we escaped with a clean sheet I'm not sure.
alias75 Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 That was his first game at centre back for a while but he played there a lot in Spain, dont forget he was very doubtful for this game with flu so he probably wasnt 100% Not sure why people still question him as a fullback i think hes done very well for us on the right and left, for someone playing their first season in the PL i think hes settled in superbly, and hes still very young people seem to forget that.
Dee Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 agree - he was poor there today. Also on a completely unrelated note: when Finnan takes the ball out from the back - why does it always stop just short of the halfway line and play it back or into the middle?
boohog Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 He wasn't great in the first half at all. Fortunately had nowt to do in the second. Shat myself when he cleared it straight to Elano in the box.
boohog Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Also on a completely unrelated note: when Finnan takes the ball out from the back - why does it always stop just short of the halfway line and play it back or into the middle? Bloody frustrating isnt it. Same as when the ball is played back from our wing and our CMs rather than pressing it out to another wing or forwards play it straight back to defense.
Nebraska Red Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 holy crap, we are getting way too picky with player performances. for his first game at CH with Carra he did well. how many hoof balls did he send upfield? none that I recall, how many times was he beaten for pace? not that many. sure , we were lucky that Citeh were playing for the draw at home with 1 player up front, but the defense as whole played well today and hardly gave Citeh a sniff at a clear chance on goal. did Reina actually make a seroius save?

Ya maybe Im being a bit harsh on him as a full back, but he's a utility player, and lets face it, how many utility players turn out to be world class (gerrard?!), he needs to find a position.

Mike Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 quite simply, we need more 20 million pound players. ifankew.
shanks59 Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Any reason Hobbs wasnt picked? Was he injured? Because he is not up to it end of story. Arbeloa is not a CH but he did not have to be today as city did not test us at the back. Two points lost today

Fair play, I did enjoy the fact that after soiling my pants he did bring the ball out of defense on the ground rather than lumping it up to their defense. We need to raise our standards, weed out the average players and get quality in. That's patent b****x. He's a great left and right back but was played out of position. It's like saying Igor Biscan wasn't a midfield monster because he was pants at CB.
stressederic Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 It worked in as much as we got the clean sheet. Arbeloa gave me several heart attacks today, but he gave it a good old go. Hopefully it's not something we will have to do to often.

He's 4th choice centre back who's apparently had flu all week, did you expect a clone of Franco Baresi or something? f***ing hell.
lawrie Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Well I for one was relieved we didn't have to rely on Riise there!! Personally I thought he was shaky to start with but grew into it a bit more as the game wore on and at least he played the ball out of defense rather than just hoofing it.
Jim D Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 What you mean it didn't work? Of course it worked, City didn't have a sniff and I don't remember Reina having to make a save. Arbeloa did extremely well considering it is not his natural position.
Guest Si Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Didnt work? Based on what? City scoring 3?
Guz Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 We kept a clean sheet. We kept the ball very well. We hoofed it less. I thought he did alright.

He played in the centre for the first time with Carra against a team who had won 9 and drew 1 of their games at home and you arent happy? FFS what do you want? The lad did exceptionally well and filled a gap that prior to today we were panicing about. Give the lad some credit FFS

Give the lad some credit FFS credit can only be given to players who cost more than twelvety million quids. there were a few players out there who could have done a bit more today, Arbeloa and Aurelio were not in that group, yet they get their own threads picking them apart. the logic, or lack of it, on here makes my head spin sometimes.
Coyler Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Had a weird game. Stuck out like a sore thumb but gave nothing away really.

Guest prophet Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 (edited) He looked as nervous as a thirteen year old on his first date! Edited December 31, 2007 by prophet
PortlandRed Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Also on a completely unrelated note: when Finnan takes the ball out from the back - why does it always stop just short of the halfway line and play it back or into the middle? Was wondering that myself. We've seen him put in some good balls. My only guess is he was told to stay back for cover.
Hightown Phil Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 I thought he played very well to be honest. Weird.
