RAFA: SAMI A DOUBT, AGGER COULD RETURN

Paul Eaton 28 December 2007

Rafael Benitez has hinted Daniel Agger could make his first team comeback at Manchester City on Sunday if Sami Hyypia fails a late fitness test.

Hyypia is battling to overcome the ankle injury sustained on Boxing Day and is considered a major doubt for the trip to the City of Manchester stadium.

But the potential loss of the Finnish star could be countered by the return of Agger who has been sidelined since September with a broken metatarsal.

"It will be difficult for Sami," said Benitez. "He is working hard with the physios and we are waiting to see whether he will be available. We will have to wait and see.

"If Sami doesn't play then we can think about using Daniel. He is training and is very close now."

Benitez reported no further injury worries ahead of the game when Liverpool will be bidding to become the first side this season to beat Manchester City at their own stadium.

"It will be a really difficult game because they have a fantastic record at home," he said. "They have a manager with experience and good players who work really hard.

"As always though we have confidence. Our away form has been good this season and we are looking for that to continue on Sunday.

"It's important for us to just keep winning. Other teams around us have been dropping points and if we win matches then at the end of this period we can have a look at the league table and see how things stand."

Tough game this. A win would really set us up though.

What would a defeat do?

Nothing.

Would be really tough this even if we had 2 fit centre backs. It's not like you can really see Chelsea or the Mancs dropping points this weekend, although Arsenal might, so anything less than a win and we'll end up cancelling out the small gain we made on boxing day.

SVEN: I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO STOP STEVIE

Paul Eaton 28 December 2007

Manchester City are preparing for their clash with Liverpool on Sunday with manager Sven Goran Eriksson admitting he has no idea how to stop Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard netted his eighth goal in ten games against Derby at the weekend as Liverpool secured the victory which took them into the top four in the Premier League table.

Eriksson is well aware of Gerrard's quality having worked with him at international level, but that doesn't mean he has the inside track on how to control the Liverpool skipper.

"I am not sure how to stop Steven," said Eriksson. "We shall have to find a way but I do know if you give him space and time and the chance to run forward with or without the ball, he is incredible.

"Steven is one of the best players you can find. He has everything. He can defend. He can tackle incredibly well. He has vision, he is an extremely good passer. He can shoot, score goals and has the energy to get up and down the pitch.

"It is very difficult to say who is the best player in the country but Steven is certainly one of them - and has been for a long time now."

Play him in midfield with Lampard, that should do the trick.

I agree. If we have any aspirations of winning the Premiership we must win this match. It's our opportunity to pull away from Man City and cement fourth place as a perch to enable us to climb higher. The three top sides, Man U, Arsenal, and Chelsea, are dropping points so if we put a run together we could take top spot still.

0-1 or 0-2 to us.

It'll probably be a tight one. Those sound like good predictions. Hope we can do it.

.................Reina....................

Finnan Carra Agger Arbeloa

Gerrard Alonso Masch Kewell

..........Kuyt,,,,,,,,Torres.......

Thats what i think he'll go with assuming Aggers right and Alonso's recovered. May be too much to ask Alonso to play 2 games in a short time in which case id go for Benayoun on the right and Stevie in the middle. I like Stevie wide right for this one because Petrov is probably their main threat and having Stevie out there would nullify that more than Benayoun.

I'm dead set s***ting myself about this game.

If we get at them early we'll beat them. United murdered them but were short of goals first half. They've played no one else, done what we should have done, i.e. won the games they should win at home.
