Dan Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 LIVERPOOL were today given a major boost when Rafa Benitez revealed he expects to have both Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso available for Wednesday’s Champions League match with Besitkas. The Spanish duo both missed Saturday’s 2-1 derby win over Everton but are now training normally following injury lay-offs. Alonso has been absent for a month with a metatarsal injury, while Torres picked up an abductor muscle injury on international duty with Spain and was forced to sit out the derby. But Benitez believes the pair are now ready to return to first team action and either or both could feature in the starting line-up in Turkey. He said: “Xabi and Fernando are important players so it is good to have them back. “They will train today and we will see how they do, but they should be available for midweek. “They are both much better. “It is important for the squad to have them back because some players are really tired after the international break.” Meanwhile, the Reds manager explained his shock decision to replace Steven Gerrard with Lucas Leiva in the second half of the derby by saying it was “for the good of the team”. He said: “I looked at the situation and I knew I had to keep the balance of the team but I also wanted to use the quality of Lucas’s passing. “People must remember that I make decisions for the good of the team. “I spoke to Steven after the game and this is what I told him. “Steven is a key player for us and he is very important but on this occasion I wanted to continue protecting the defence by keeping Mascherano and Sissoko in midfield, but I also wanted to use Lucas’s passing. “And the way it turned out Lucas was unlucky not to score the winning goal because he was only stopped by a handball.”
Swagger Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Excellent. Any news concerning Kewell? Would be nice to have another option on the left.
honourablegeorge Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Excellent. Any news concerning Kewell? Would be nice to have another option on the left. Think Kewell's return will be in the form of reserve games, at least fo rthe time being. He's not had a competitive game for a long while.

downunder Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Have Australia got any matches on? He could use those to get match fit... Didn't the last report say he was 'hoping' to play for the reserves on Thursday. The Australia/Cup Final digs at him are boring now (and have been for months).
Swagger Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 The Australia/Cup Final digs at him are boring now (and have been for months). Australian or not, you have to admit that its very frustrating that he was fit for those games, yet was injured once again the minute the season started.
Rimbeux Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Australian or not, you have to admit that its very frustrating that he was fit for those games, yet was injured once again the minute the season started. Not really, if you choose to interperate it as some kind of us and them issue, that's your concern.
Andy Mac Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) Being generally reported on the newswires that Torres is out for tomorrow. He hasn't travelled with the squad Edited October 23, 2007 by Sammy Lee's body double

Bailo Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 The one report about Torres (Ireland Online?) says Agger hasn't travelled, neither have Aurelio or Kewell.
Gomez Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Didn't the last report say he was 'hoping' to play for the reserves on Thursday. The Australia/Cup Final digs at him are boring now (and have been for months). I was a big fan of Kewell, and defended him from the rubbish thrown at him by the press and some fans, but this summer's debacle was the last straw for me now. If he doesn't retire from international football, I would be happy to see the back of him.
Andy Mac Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Liverpool provisional squad: Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Benayoun, Gerrard, Mascherano, Sissoko, Alonso, Pennant, Crouch, Voronin, Kuyt, Babel, Lucas, Hobbs, Itandje.
Guest Prongsy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 I just hope that Torres is fit for Sunday, whilst this game is massively important from a financial (and pride, of course) aspect, I'm more concerned with getting our league title bid back on track.
Guest Prongsy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) torres hasnt travelled I think he has, with Rafa making a late decision. Strange, as he isn't really needed that much for this game. I have a nagging feeling that he is going to miss the Arsenal game. Edited October 23, 2007 by Prongsy

Guest Prongsy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) http://www.newsnow.co.uk/newsfeed/?search=torres Well, that's wrong. Unless of course they all overrule .tv Nah, only joking. It's just that .tv has said that "Meanwhile on the injury front, Xabi Alonso is back in the squad for the trip to Istanbul and Benitez will make a late decision on the fitness of Fernando Torres." Unless that's been taken and he won't travel? Which will ease my fears anyway. Edited October 23, 2007 by Prongsy
CarraLegend Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Heres hoping we can fluke a win with this dreadful clown we currently have in charge.
Dan Posted October 23, 2007 Author Posted October 23, 2007 The original diagnosis was about 8-10 days so its probably about right if Torres misses this one. We need him back for Sunday big time.
cymrococh Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Heres hoping we can fluke a win with this dreadful clown we currently have in charge. He'll probably play Agger in centre mid and bench Gerrard at this rate.
Cooldude Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 He'll probably play Agger in centre mid and bench Gerrard at this rate. Even if we win 8-0 doing that, he's still a crazy loon to not start his best player who could've won him the game
honourablegeorge Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 He's as out as George Michael http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0500liv...-name_page.html
Stevie H Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 He's as out as George Michael http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0500liv...-name_page.htmlffs. sell the injury-prone c***. and play babel up front.

Either that or we were just lucky. Edited October 23, 2007 by kick316
