With the recent debates over the weekends refereeing decisions; what rule(s) would you like to see brought or amended to ensure the game flows better, aids referees and maintains discipline?

I'll start;

01. Only two players are allowed to talk to the referee during the game; the captains of each team and the player the referee wishes to speak to. This would also include shouting at an official from a great distance or talking to/shouting at the assistant referees. Anyone else attempting to speak to the referee gets booked.

02. A repeal of the new offside ruling. Go back to the was it was previously, this current ruling is confusing and gives the officials very little chance. As some one famous once said, "if you're not interfering with play, what are you doing on the pitch?"

03.The referee blows for a direct or indirect freekick and the opposition are arguing; (a) if they're not the captain, then they're booked (b) if they are the captain and he refuses to accept the referees decision, the kick is moved ten yards forwards and so on.

We could learn an awful lot from rugby.

Players have in the past been given bans after games for violent conduct the ref missed but was caught on camera.

This should be used to ban players retrospectively for diving.

The previous offside rule DID exclude players not interfering with play. One of the problems with removing that phrase from the rule would be that if a winger gets to the bye-line, crosses the ball in and someone heads in a goal, then the winger would typically be offside.

I thought they DID bring in that rule a couple of years ago (?)

They did, but that rule is rarely applied, how many times have you actually seen a ref use it?

WHat about this?

Each manager is allowed up to two (or maybe even only one) calls per game (like tennis players, who have three) for a review of video evidence to contend a decision. Obviously they have to use this wisely so the game itself won't keep stopping and starting, but at least for game changing decisions they have the right to get the officials to review video evidence like in Cricket and potentially revise their decision.

Penalties, ball crossing the line, sending offs and so on would be obvious candidates.

There. I've said it.

A small change to that as that probably won't work.

The managers would bring it up with the fifth ref who reviews the video while the match continues. Keeps the match flowing and makes sure the right call gets made. Also makes sure managers don't start "killing" the game when it suits them. And only have one call each half.

Almost forgot....

Add a second referee to the field. Having only one fat idiot out there trying to keep up with play is ridiculous.

Yellow cards are handed out for nothing these days compared to 15 years ago.

Therefore, 10 minute sin bin for a 2nd yellow. 3rd Yellow and your off. (Graham Poll could come out of retirement) A sending off should be a very rare thing, not the daily occurence it is now.

Too many defenders get away with shielding the ball aggressively, whereas if it happens elsewhere on the pitch the ref blows for blatent obstruction.

Really pisses me off this one.

Been sayin for a while that captains should get a maximum 3 appeals to a video-ref during a game.

Another one from Rugby should be blood replacements.

A temporary sub for bleeding players, so we are not down to ten men while one of our players is being stitched up because the opposition are elbow wielding hooligans

They seemed to use it a bit at first, but then quietly forgot about it.

It got rescinded, countries where they don't play rugby didn't understand it.

shirt numbers from 1-11 and get rid of names on the back of shirts, I've always hated that s***ty american sports idea.

can't agree there, squad numbers are great

Totally agree with this, this has pissed me off for ages too.

Really?

I also remember there being problems whereby sometimes the advancing by 10 yards actually put the attacking team in a less advantageous position, i.e. an 18 yard free kick (difficult to get over the wall and down under the crossbar) rather than a (say) 25 yard free kick which is a definite goal chance if you've got a player capable of doing it.
