FULHAM have been told they can sign Sami Hyypia — if Liverpool secure a replacement.

Anfield manager Rafa Benitez is desperate to add another defender to his squad with Manchester United’s Gabriel Heinze still his leading target.

But with Alex Ferguson blocking the deal, Benitez is looking at other options before he lets Hyypia, 33, go for around £1.5million.

Fulham chief Lawrie Sanchez has already had one bid knocked back.

But Benitez knows the big Finn is keen for a move to Fulham.

It would guarantee him regular first-team football and see him link up with his friend, Antti Niemi — who will be fit in a week after scans revealed he has not broken his wrist.

Sanchez has warned his new-look side he is ready to swing the axe again at Craven Cottage.

He has brought in eight new players and said: “The ones I think can take us on will be here next summer, the ones I think won’t, won’t.”

not seeing any quotes to back that up like ;)

I hope he stays. Getting relegated with Fulham wouldn't be a good way to go.

I can't see this being true - I read some gossip somewhere yesterday that Paletta could be going out on loan.

the question wld then be, do u replace hyypia with 'experience' or u want to bring sonmeone young(youth squad perhaps).

this person must know our 'systems' and be willing to sit on the bench as it's pretty sewn up that carra & agger are our 2 main central defenders. RB rarely 'rotates' his back 5.

Didn't Hyppia have "clear the air" talks with Rafa' a few weeks back, to which Rafa' told him he was still part of his plans?

Sami will know that Carra-Agger will play a lot of the games, but it's a long season. If Sami goes then we are short of experienced cover. It leaves us with Alvaro Arbeloa, who right now is also covering right and left back - can we clone him? :D

Be mad to let him go, not only a great player and professional, but he knows the systems Rafa plays. He'll end up playing a fair share of games I bet, if he stays. Just not 40-50 games. I guess a lot depends on what happens with Heinze.

I entirely agree. Just pointing out that I thought any speculation about Sami's future had been cleared up week's ago... although nothing is set in stone I guess.

Hyppia's worth more to the squad than the mill' or so we'd get for him if he was sold.

If he goes it will be because Sami wants to get more playing time, not because we want to sell him and as I said before, I thought that issue had been cleared up..

I would be very sorry to see Sami leave, but the club shouldn't stand in his way if he wants to continue his career playing regular first-team football with another club. Sami deserves respect and to be treated well. He has been an exemplary player for us - how many bookings did he receive playing for LFC? Incredibly few for a Premiership centre-back.

If Sami Wants to Leave, he has done enough for the club to warrant his wishes, been a class act...

However he still does have a job and can see him playing a part tonight....

Aye, that has been a disappointing aspect but generally he has been a great Centre Back for us.

If Rafa allows Sami to go if he gets Heinze in he is out of his mind, thats like replacing Messi with Pennant.

Sami was a rock last season and often MOTM when he was playing, Heinze was poor all season and I dont see him even close to the quality Sami has as a CB.

...and a bit more tripe!

Please just stop.

Given a straight choice between the two I'd keep Sami, but extreme comments like yours do nothing other than make me want to fight Heinze's corner.

Why is it extreme? Do you think Pennant is that bad?

A lot of people seems to rate him highly.

let's pretend you're not being deliberately stupid for a second.

fine defender for the club as Sami has been, he is past his best, has been replaced by better and is now back-up to Carra & Agger.

Messi is currently one of the best players in the World.

hope this helps
