Paisley Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 For a while now we've posed very little threat from our set-plays, and one of the reasons I was really hoping we'd sign Tevez this summer was his ability from free-kicks - there was one game last season (against Spurs I think) where everyone knew where the ball was headed but he still managed to curl it in. If we couldn't get Tevez I thought we'd sign Simao or Alves, both of whom are handy from set-plays, but now that it looks like we won't be signing any of them, is there anyone amongst the current squad who could make us more dangerous from free-kicks? It could make a big difference as we try and close the gap to Chelsea and Man U.
Guz Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Direct free kicks? No idea. Corners and free kicks knocked into the box hopefully Steve Finnan for me. Or Kewell
Guest Cardie Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Free Kicks are the least of our problems, Alonso, Pennant, Kewell, Gerrard, Riise, Aurelio, Torres, can all hit a free kick. What we need is someone who can beat the first man at a corner and for someone to tell the player coming short to f*** off to prevent those god awful short efforts that we always f*** up.

Not like John Barnes or a real free-kick expert can - that's the type of difference between us now and a title winning side.
yellow jumper Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 think just as important as set piece delivery is getting someone to attack the ball like drogba, terry or vidic when it comes into the box.

RafaShanks Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 We haven't had a set piece specialist since Gary Mac. Lost count of the number of times we scored from them in 2000/01. Our general set plays are usually s****. The one's that really bug me are when we choose to lay it off allowing the wall to charge it.
yellow jumper Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 according to the supplement in the guardian today we scored the second largest percentage of our goals from set pieces last season along with arsenal and spurs, chelsea inevitably top. surprised me.
stressederic Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I've always thought that with his left foot, Agger seems like the type of player who could have a go from freekicks around the area.
Stevie H Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I've always thought that with his left foot, Agger seems like the type of player who could have a go from freekicks around the area.definitely. was saying that during the match yesterday.
Puskas Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I think Yossi took a lot of the set pieces for West Ham. He might be a useful option for whipping free kicks in from wider areas.
sutty Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 We have the push it to one side and hammer it over the bar/into the wall options amply covered with Gerrard and Riise. We really need that curler that goes straight down the goalies throat option covering now.
cymrococh Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 We really need that curler that goes straight down the goalies throat option covering now.donde esta top corner?
Kite Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Corner taking more a priority I had thought, rarely seem to look dangerous there. Hope Gerrard stays in the box this season and leaves them to Finnan to take
The Hitman Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Gerrard really should get in the box from corners,I remember him attacking crosses and corners back in the day.
sutty Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Corner taking more a priority I had thought, rarely seem to look dangerous there. Hope Gerrard stays in the box this season and leaves them to Finnan to takeAye. 2 reasons. 1. Gerrard's corners aren't that good.2. Gerrard attacks the ball and heads it well. Letting him take them decreases the quality of delivery and takes out an aerial threat
Paisley Posted August 11, 2007 Author Posted August 11, 2007 I guess that's that question answered then! This thread can now be closed
