Elisha_Scott Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Fabio Aurelio may not be fit for the start of the new season. The Brazilian full-back suffered cruciate ligament damage last season and had been expected to be fit in time for pre-season training. However, Benitez has admitted there is a major doubt over Aurelio. "Fabio isn't fit yet. It could be another month before he is recovered, but we knew it would be a long time when he suffered the injury," said Benitez. "He is improving, but it's not easy when you have this kind of injury." Meanwhike, Benitez has also confirmed the appointment of a new goalkeeper coach with Spaniard Xavi Valero replacing fellow countryman Jose Ochotorena. "Xavi is an important addition to our backroom staff and I'm looking forward to working with him," said Benitez. I thought Aurelio did his achilles? Also, I was never expecting him back for the start of the season, just assumed it would be October-ish.
muleskinner Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Ruptured achilles wasn't it? I was expecting him to be out until Christmas at least.
New York Red Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Achilles is a really tough injury to come back from.
DazzlaJ Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Achilles is a really tough injury to come back from. he needs to man up
Guz Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 He's in light training though isn't he? If he starts proper training in a month I think he'll have done pretty well.
RafaShanks Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Fantastic player, who's career at us and Valencia has been blightered with injury. Even if we sign Heinze, can't see us letting Riise leave as Fabio's fitness cannot be relied on.
fyds Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 He's in light training though isn't he? If he starts proper training in a month I think he'll have done pretty well.Usually means weights and exercises, rather than actually kicking a ball - hope he gets back quickly though - cracking player.
Stevie H Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 they're confusing aurelio's injury with garcia's aren't they?
McBain Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Bascombe's article said it was his cruciate yesterday so they've probably just copied from that. It was deffo reported at the time as his achilles though
Gunga Din Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 defo the achilles, which is a b*****d of an injury. i'd say it'll be closer to christmas than the start of the season before we see him back
Rimbeux Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 defo the achilles, which is a b*****d of an injury. i'd say it'll be closer to christmas than the start of the season before we see him back 12 weeks is realistic to come back from a rupture with no complications. Thing with Fabio is the history of calf muscle trouble and the need to put in so much work building the power back up in that area.
Red Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/mediawatch/drill...070405-0849.htm Real shame he got injured when he did. He looked like he was really coming good, can't wait to see him back.
PrittStick Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 When I heard 3 - 4 months being quoted I thought that was a little unrealistic. I'd say it'd be mid-October before we saw a return. 6 months is more realistic for an achilles problem. Especially in someone who is prone to complicated injuries!

Steve Backley for one came back from a rupture in 12 weeks to win an olympic silver at Javelin, a massively demanding event on that area. Treatment used to be allowing it to heal, but the surgeons seem to have moved the techniques on since Barnes day. How quick you come back is more about building hte muscle power back up

How quick you come back is more about building hte muscle power back up Yeah but the point with Aurelio is, with most of his other serious injuries he's had complications. He had a knee injury that was supposed to keep him out for 3 months and he ended up being out for more or less 18 months. He had a calf injury that was supposed to last 10 days and ended up lasting two months. Certain people are prone to slower healing and injuries which become complicated - and he is seemingly one of those people. So, for him, 3-4 months was unrealistic whereas it might be a valid estimation for a person who DOESNT have the fitness problems he has.
Mikey Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 As I understand it they have used a newer technique on his Achilles, they've grafted some synthetic fibres into the damaged area to make it actually stronger than before when he comes back. A mate of mine who knows something about the procedure involved was of the opinion at the time that his ongoing calf injuries could be fixed long term by the improvement in his Achilles area. For mate read customer in my pub who I get bladdered with occasionally.

I hear what you're saying, but you can't just say it's in his history therefore...There could be mis-diagnosis etc involved in those specific cases, it's what is relevent to this injury that I'd thnk about. With Fabio, my main worry would be that his calf muscle may not stand up to the work he needs to put into it to get back to full capacity after the wasting and inactivity, not that the injury itself is slow to heal. I'd imagine this is the stage he's at now, and it's slow going with the strength work. Hopefully as Mike said this might sort out some long term issues.

I think what's relevant to this injury is that he's had achilles problems before, which came from the knee injury he suffered whilst at Valencia. He had two operations on his knee and it was touch and go whether he needed another one on his achilles because the rehab he was doing for the knee had put too much strain on the achilles. I don't know if it's a weakness or what, that has caused his calf problems. Again, I am no doctor. Then again, he has had one of those innovative new operations, as already said above, so perhaps that will do him good in the long run. He's been doing bike work for about a month and a half now if the training camp in Spain is anything to go on, so that'll have done some good! I was just saying that I always saw 3 months as optimistic when he seems to heal slowly. Hopefully our medical team are more adequate than Valencia's. Edited July 15, 2007 by PrittStick

For me it was all about how much work he can get through in building himself back up, which is why thought and extra 8-12 weeks of that was ott.

PrittStick Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Aye, no doctor either. For me it was all about how much work he can get through in building himself back up, which is why thought and extra 8-12 weeks of that was ott. Well apparently he is "hoping to be training again in four weeks" - so it depends on what you read into that. There's 4 weeks gone already. Then you have to consider what kind of training that would actually be. If he's only been in the gym doing weights and hydrotherapy, bike work, etc, he'll be starting off jogging initially. From what I recall from other injuries it normally takes about a week or two before running and ball work can be embarked upon. So there is six. Then he'll probably do a couple of reserve games to get in some match practice. So, eight weeks? That would be the end of September. If you look at that, another 8 weeks isn't that OTT. It's not that urgent that he comes back anyway. I suppose we have Riise, although I wasn't too fussed on him yesterday to be honest. Haven't been too fussed on him for awhile, now, but he's adequate, so there's no point in rushing a notoriously injury prone player back from a serious injury when it's not absolutely necessary. Having said that, an early return would be beneficial.
Zoob Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 So, eight weeks? That would be the end of September. End of September is about 11 weeks away. Hopefully he could be back around the start of Sept.
PrittStick Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 End of September is about 11 weeks away. Hopefully he could be back around the start of Sept. Was looking at Worst Case Scenario. Start of September would be good. All depends on if we actually buy a left back because I just don't trust Riise to play every game. Then again, Arbeloa can play left back if needs be.
Ronnie Whelan Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 There something up with the Turf on the left wing in Anfield.
