First goal was no fluke, says Inzaghi

The first of Filippo Inzaghi's two Champions League-winning goals for Milan was a fluke according to Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.

"It was luck but that is football," the Spaniard said of the goal that deflected off Inzaghi from Andrea Pirlo's free-kick.

Most of the Olympic Stadium crowd would no doubt have agreed with him but the scorer had an alternative viewpoint.

"It was something that we rehearsed in training," said Inzaghi with a grin. "I scored with it against Empoli. Sometimes it just comes off."

Whether it was deliberate or not, there is little doubt it was the turning point of the match, which Milan won 2-1, and it was fitting that Inzaghi was involved. The 33-year-old has suffered from a number of injuries over the last couple of years and missed Milan's defeat on penalties by Liverpool in Istanbul two years ago.

This season, his scoring form has been mixed with four goals from 11 games in the Champions League before Wednesday, including two in the qualifiers, and just two goals in 20 Serie A outings.

Before the final, there was much debate about whether Carlo Ancelotti, the Milan coach, would play Inzaghi or Alberto Gilardino up front.

Inzaghi's double strike repaid his coach's confidence. "I have a very special relationship with Milan," he said. "A couple of years ago I missed a lot of games through injury but the club kept faith in me and when I was fit again they welcomed me back with open arms. They showed real trust in me."

surely such a move is illegal, which begs the question why do it unless you thought you could get away with it ( kind of implies they knew the referee they would be getting in advance) -

He scored 2 goals in a Champions League final to possibly make himself a legend then he completely ruins that by rolling around like a frickin baby after getting touched by the ball.

Then the most blatant and typically Inzaghi type time wasting i have ever seen - deliberately standing 20 yards offside and shouting for the ball. What a twonker

The move is only illegal if it involved the deliberate use of the hand. If you try and throw yourself into the path of the ball your intent is normally to block/divert the ball from its natural course with your body. It is a matter for the referee to determine whether any contact with the hand in such circumstances was intentional or not. The goal was a fluke because Inzaghi had no control over where the ball was going. It's a pity that it didn't just hit him straight in the face and rebound away from our goal as Pirlo's shot was otherwise on target.

I think you will find that every striker will claim a goal scored by a deflection off them on the basis that they intended to deflect the ball into the net whereas if it strikes a defender and is deflected in they will apply the opposite standard and claim the deflection was accidental!

Practiced? My a***.

What next? Lampard's deflected goals are practiced as well.

He's a pinball wizard.

probably not practiced to produce the same result as Wednesday, but the idea of banging in a free kick towards a few bodies has been done before as teams look for that flukey deflection.

i am sure lampard's deflections are not practiced, but if you hit the ball into a crowd towards thje goal, you never know what will happen.

we may not like Inzaghi, but he is the type of player we lacked, someone who is in the right pace at the right time with an eye for putting the ball in the net.

It was handball

I wouldn't expect the ref to have seen it though

and the lino was blindside.

lampard's deflected goals are a direct result of mourniho telling him to hit the ball first-time more often. hit the ball earlier, less chance of a defender getting into position to block, more chance of a deflection.

He's a f*cking odious c*nt with a horrible mouth and a deeply unpleasant way of playing the game; how on earth you can make a career from shinning it in from a yard out and the ball bouncing off your a*** into the net is beyond me.

That first goal wasn't a fluke for him, it was just a typical f*cking Inzaghi goal.

he makes a career out of his ability to be in the right place at the right time.

over the years , there have been many strikers who have built their careers around tap ins and soft goals, Van Nistelroy is a current example and there have been many more.

at the end of the day, a player could be the devil himself, but he would be worshipped if he puts the ball away on a regular basis.

..and despite strong competition from Manchester and London, he still has by far the most punchable face in football...

Good on him as he obviously did intend it!

Got to think though now - if he does it again - any ref worth their salt should know that it is deliberate use of his arm and therefore handball.

The spawny t***.
