Steven Gerrard has promised Liverpool will mount a serious challenge for the Premiership title next season.

The Reds have failed to close the gap on the leading duo this time around, finishing 21 points adrift of champions Manchester United.

However, Gerrard feels with investment in the squad this summer, Rafa Benitez will have a squad capable of going all the way in the league next season.

Although Gerrard is thrilled to have reached the final of this season's UEFA Champions League he knows it is time for them to start performing consistently in the league.

"The league is always your bread and butter as a Liverpool player - and we're not far away," he is quoted in the ***.

"With investment in the summer, and the squad already staying together, we can promise to push Chelsea and United all the way next year.

"You ask the manager or any of the players and they would say exactly the same thing - we had bigger ambitions for this season than just the Champions League.

"We always had one eye on Europe but we also wanted the league flag flying back at Anfield."

I can't help thinking there's more to winning the league than throwing money at a squad to fill it full of world class players. Just look at this season, Chelsea have lost the league with the likes of Shevchenko and Ballack yet United won it with the likes of Fletcher, Wes Brown and Saha ;)

Man U play every single game like their lives depended on it. If nothing else Slur Alex knows how to motivate his team before every game and make it count.

United won it with the likes of Ronaldo & Scholes, the rest were there to make up the numbers.

Apart from if your centre back's brother plays for the opposition, your central midlfielders ex-club, who will get relegated if you beat them.

Just what I've said in the Rafa thread. It's not about the players ability, by getting to the final of the European cup, they've proven that they can beat the best. If we play every game like our lives depend on it, then there's no reason why we can't topple Man U, after all player for player we are as good, if not better than them.

If we sign more than one or two new players for the starting line-up then we will have a slow start to the season - again. It always takes time for new players to adjust to a new league (in some cases), a new set of team mates, possibly a new system and a new manager. It also takes time for the existing players to build up an understanding with the new players.

If we're within a half dozen points of the top by Christmas then we can talk about tilts at the title... until (unless!) that happens I'm going to keep my expectations low.

but the key isn't just how the newbies start is it ?

I know it was a World Cup year but if our big guns such as Gerrard, Carra and Xabi struggle like they did at the start of last season....

Thats the bit that caught my eye. Seems as though he is confident all the main players will still be there eg Alonso, Sissoko

Serious as cancer man! :D

our back four and goalie are better both man for man than theirs, our central mid is better than theirs. The only place where they are superior to us are the two wide positions and the two forward positions. Unfortunately, they are much better than us in those positions, whilst we are only slightly better than them in defence and centre mid.

more true of chelsea, imo.

I always thought 2007/8 would be more realistic anyway. I was hoping that we would finish top 2 though, so no qualifier, especially with no world cup or euros this summer.

We'll just have to win it then.

Qualifiers can just replace a few friendlies though - in fact, they're probably better because it gives Rafa the chance to explore new possibilities, especially in the second legs (when presumably the tie has been secured).

Gerrard is blatantly on RW duty for the next two years

Not if we sell Sissoko or he plays off the striker.
