In line with legislation which is due to come into force on 1st July 2007 Liverpool Football Club has issued the following statement.

We would like to take this opportunity to advise all of our supporters and customers that when you visit the Stadium next season, 2007/08, the whole of the Stadium, including lounges, concourses and the seating bowl will be 'Smoke Free'.

Hurrah! As a non smoker, I object to people sitting around me in the stadium smoking. I do not mind people smoking in the concourse or any other area where you can move about freely though and even I as a vociferous anti-smoker see this as a draconian measure. Surely some common sense has to be applied here?

it's the law, no smoking in public places

Surely lads can have a smoke in the concourse witha blind eye being turned. The smoke free zone that they are implying is way too heavy handed. I'm a smoker myself, but I wouldn't smoke during a game it's not on if it's driving the guy beside you mad. Half time however.....

I find myself in two minds about this. One the one hand I welcome the overdue consideration of we non-smoker's lungs, clothes and rights, on the other, I wonder what the next freedom they take away will be? If we go into this like lambs to the slaughter, they'll conclude they can do anything they like. And you know what? THEY'D be right!

Exactly. The concourses are enclosed public spaces within the meaning of the new law. The stadium isn't enclosed, however, so smoking could still be allowed. The club is hiding behind the law.

This was bound to come - smoking has already been banned in other stadiums including Old Trafford.

Doesn't make it any less s***, though.

if its anything like the way its been introduced elsewhere, then no blind eye will be turned, as the club risks being heavily fined if it allows people to smoke anywhere in the stadium. can only be a good thing really

the law in Ireland is that you can't smoke in any area where people are working essentially.. there are people working in anfield, it's private property, but it is outdoors. Not sure about the english rule mind but I think it's probably gonna be something similar. People might be upset with it now but it will pass.

The hospital i work at has been no smoking on the whole site since March but i still see about 20 people a day having one

People will still smoke at the game

s***? It's awesome news! And not before time.

You are obviously a non-smoker so you don't give a toss about the discomfort that this will cause smokers. That's fair enough. However I doubt whether at present you are really subjected to any genuine discomfort at Anfield caused by cigarette smoke. I don't really see why the non-smokers should be quite so f***ing jubilant. It's just schadenfreude.

i fear for non-smokers after July 1st this year

what are they going to be able to whine about? There'll be this hole in their life that they wont know how to fill, i hope the Government has thought this through and has helplines and support groups waiting in the wings for them all.

I'm in no position to moan about smokers, I smoke at home every night, but the stance taken by the likes of Portly above is pathetic. What do they do when they go a plane?
