all of our ex/ on loan keepers are having excellent seasons, James, friedel and especially Carson

he does look like he wants to murder few of his defenders the way they have played this season

Posted

Haven't seen any of tonights action, but he's been great in a piss poor Charlton side.

Hope the experience/regular games will only improve him.

he has pulled off 4 or 5 top top quality saves

Posted

Was gonna start a thread saying exactly the same!

World class saves.

Was reading a story in one of the rags the other day about Reina/Villa. Suggested that Carson's loan is with a view to a permanent move.

Is this true, or as usual, is a tabloid journo making things up to suit the angle of his story?

I'm sure I read that there was no chance of Carson being sold when he moved to Charlton on loan? May have even been a Rafa quote?

This season has been the making of him. Think he'll be read to fight for the number 1 jersey next season.

hasnt he just signed a new long term contract

he will come back when Jerzy f***s off and will fight for no 1...reina will stay however

Has he signed contract? Before he went on loan?

Hope that's the case. Would really irritate me if we let him go - considering how well he's playing and how much we had to fight to get him.

I can't see Reina leaving, but I think he needs genuine competition. Carson will give that, and - if he continues to play the way he is for an awful team - i think he has a chance of disposing him as no 1.

aye, i think thats the likely scenario

Different game keeping for us though. Wont be in the game as much, and it becomes as much about concentration and low error count as great saves. Really hard to know for sure with our keepers till they've had a long run.

Dont think he'll ever displace Reina myself, unless Reina goes Dudek like at some point which I cant see. He'll be good back up though which he probably wont want though.

i think he's proven he can ack it in the premiership. i think he needs to be loaned out to a bigger club than charlton tho - somewhere with a decent bunch of defenders he can boss. i woudnt have thought any of the big four first team keepers could do a lot for them in their current form

excuse me Jose can you shove Petr Cech aside so Scotty can get some experience

get a f***ing grip

tehre is a reason why he went on loan to Charlton

He had a great game tonight, which makes it all the more puzzling we were linked with the keeper in Italy as Scot has extended his contract with us.

what the f*** are you on about you prick - read what i said. presumably charlton were thought to have been a lot more successful than they have been this season. rafa's not gonna want to offload a player to a team likely to be relegated as it's going to crush theit confidence! sort yourself out

charlton's the ideal club for him to be at, and he's been their best player this season. nowt like playing for a team whose defence are constantly under pressure. it means he has to be not just alert, but more vocal. qualities that will serve us well when he comes back.

wasn't there talk recently of jerzy earning a 12-month extension?

sure tho he'd be better off at a better team with a decent defence he can command - learn those skills. he's obviously a good shot stopper but you need to be more than than if you want to be a liverpool #1. that's the point i'm making. reina has a lot more to his game than that, hence dudek being pushed back to #2

Truth in both arguments, I think. Problem we had with Kirkland is that he looked brilliant on highlight reels as a shot-stopper but was not actually a very good keeper.

he's plenty of time to learn to take charge of a more organised defence. i imagine he was dispatched to charlton to develop the bread and butter end of his goalkeeping, which he has been doing admirably. he's first choice, playing every match and being kept busy - those are plenty of positives for us.

Question:

Seeing as all these s*** sides seem to have an amazing keeper stopping bi-weekly 10-0 drubbings between the sticks, is he actually that good or is it just s***-team '15 shots on target, 4 goals therefore 11 "world-class" saves' syndrome? I saw the game and he looked ace, but it does seem to apply to every relegation-threatened team nowadays... Devil's advocate question, as I think he's class, although not quite at Reina's all-round game level, especially with respect to Reina's sweeping side of his game.

way I see it, pretty much every goalie at this level is a good shot stopper. It's just a basic requirement. And the fact is, the poorer teams see the most difficult shots, so a goalie gets more ammo to save. It's what often annoys me about the hype that surrounds some goalies, when in fact, they aren't that special, they are just very instinctive shot stoppers.

As for Carson, this will help him, cos playing for us, he was hardly going to be facing 10 - 15 shots a game! So no doubt this won't do him any harm honing his talents as shot stopper and helping him positionally facing up to shots from all angles. The more technical stuff and the command of their area, which is what marks out the likes of Cech, Van der Sar and Reina from your average goalie is probably where he'll need to strengthen, but I guess he's young enough still. And it'd make sense that after a season at Charlton getting plenty of practise in the shot stopping department, he'd come back to work with our goalie coach on the other things.
