REDS AGREE KUYT DEAL

Paul Eaton 17 August 2006

Rafael Benitez is on the verge of landing Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt after Liverpool agreed a fee with Feyenoord for his transfer.

The 26 year old, who played for Holland in their 4-0 victory over Republic of Ireland in Dublin last night, will undergo a medical on Merseyside before completing his switch to Anfield.

"For me, Liverpool is sure to be the dream club I was looking for," explained Kuyt.

"There was more interest from abroad, but for me there was nothing of the calibre of Liverpool, a brilliant club with an enormous reputation, fantastic support and a fabulous history. It is an honour to play for a club like that."

Feyenoord were desperate to keep their prolific striker in Holland but fully understand his decision to begin a new career with the five times European champions.

"We did everything we could to keep Dirk at Feyenoord," said Chairman Jorien Van den Herik. "We went a long way to doing that and Dirk was open to that, but we knew that the chance was he would leave if his dream club came in. Liverpool is his dream club.

"Many clubs have tried to contact Dirk over the recent period, but he's said no to clubs every time because they were not appealing enough despite there being many renowned clubs among them. That characterises Dirk's attitude: either Feyenoord or my dream club."

They've just had a Feyenoord spokesman on TV and he sounds absolutely gutted - which is very nice to hear!

He's not signed. We've just agreed a fee.

He has to agree terms (which sound's more or less done) and pass a medical.

Sounds like it will happen soon, but not signed yet.

Come on now, you know very well it is a done deal. Put that Devil's Advocate hat away...

Well the Feyenoord spokesman just said as far as Feyenoord are concerned,

Kuyt is now a Liverpool player. Good enough for me.

The spokesman actually gave quite a long interview about Kuyt and could hardly

have been more positive about the player and has no doubt he will be a big

success in the PL. Also gave the impression that DK has always seen

Liverpool as his dream club - yet another boyhood fan?

Feyenoord fans will be gutted though.

feyenoord spokesman on sky saying he could be a liverpudlian by end of today. he is in liverpool agreeing personal terms and doing a medical, but as far as feyenoord are concerned the deal is done.

says hes easily the most popular player with the feyenoord fans and they are v sorry to see him go. they tried their best to keep him but he wanted to go to his dream club of liverpool.

he says its a straight cash deal, no players involved.

said we are getting a very hard working prolific goalscorer

said spurs were after him last season but this season the only concrete offers were newcastle and liverpool and there was no question which one he would go to.

says the fact that he may not start all games will be a challenge he will welcome

I like the fact that he goes clubbing wearing a shirt of the team he plays for.

Can you just imagine Gerrard out in Liverpool with his no. 8 on?

Some bouncer would probably stop him saying "no football shirts"
