Corinthians bought Tevez for £12M, and the figures being bandied about when Tevez was linked to Chelsea 18 months ago were astronomical. People were genuinely astounded that he went to West Ham when he seemed destiend to go to one of the top clubs in Europe for a big fee. Having said that I think it's fair to question the underlying point that somehow Tevez is "proven" in the premiership after a good run of games at the tail end of last season. He'd be just as much a gamble as Torres is.
