The BBC article has indeed got the initial fee as £3.87M and then goes on to quote Harry saying the £9M he'll get for Benjani would go straight to pay for Defoe. Bit of a difference there Mr Redknapp. Either there's a load of conditional payments lumped onto the deal, or something is a bit wierd about the whole thing.

Paul Merson had to have his £300K flat repossessed a few weeks ago because of mounting debts due to his alcohol+gambling problem. He's had to move back in with his parents. And one of his teeth fell out live on TV whilst doing Sky Sports News. Karma.

I assume that any money loaned directly for building the new stadium can be secured against the future revenues created by that very stadium, so it's not quite the same situation. Of course banks would have to be certain that the stadium would actually generate that income.
