They did well to get out of the group stage, given the opposition. Certainly gave Brazil something to think about during their game.

It's been interesting in that most of the 'no-hopers' have put in decent performances against the bigger teams (Australia & Ghana v Brazil for starters) and have progressed/ performed better than expected. I think this WC will be remembered for the last-stand of the old guard ( Zidane, Figo, Nedved, etc), and the rise of the new (Messi, Robben, Rooney, Marquez etc).

Xabi is, of course, the master and I think Figo's proved he's still got it in spades. Carrick's shown a simplicity and economy in his passing which rarely gets mentioned these days of hollywood balls and flicks. Top marks. Pleat probably thought to mention it, but 'Xabi Alonso' was just too much of a mouthful for the illiterate feck.

Abramovich must have the 2000-01 version of CM. Watch him go for Cherno Samba, and Biscan next. PS: I've heard a certain Irish winger would "love" a move here.
