To be fair, even with (a hypothetical ) Henry, Hunt & Greaves as options they'd struggle to score the way we play. It's not important who's at the sharp end of things; it's the cavalry coming in behind that matters. True, a predatory striker with the ability to turn defenders inside-out is a benefit (hello, Robbie) but we've got our goals mostly through overloading in attack, spreading the ball around and pulling defences out of shape for the midfielders to slot one in past a crowded box. Classic Valencia-style. Defences in the prem close down and re-group too quickly for it to work in the prem. Although this doesn't mitigate Mori, Cisse and Crouch's profligacy in front of goal, it's acknowldgement that our midfield (bar Xabi and Garcia) lack the vision to provide the defence-splitting balls Cisse and Mori at least would relish: How many times have we seen our strikers having to turn their backs to goal to recieve a pass? It's frustrating. Don't build the gallows just yet; wait at least until our midfield has mastered the art of the early pass to space ahead of the striker.
