Nepo baby footballers have become way more of a thing in recent years.

Before he came, I was wondering whether we’d ever win the league or CL again. And I was pretty certain that even if we did, it wouldn’t be with a manager we looked up to as a great personality. The fact that it did happen gives me hope it will happen again. (In theory I don’t care so much about the “great man” bit of it but we’ve been so spoiled over the years that I think we kinda do need that.)

He can manage his players however he wants. How we talk about our players is none of his business. Tbf I think he’d agree (although he did geg in a bit re Trent).

I thought we’d done really well that summer when we brought in Endo, Szob, Macca and Grav. Turns out we did just alright.

I don’t think it’s massively controversial to think we should have at least one senior specialist for each position on the pitch. Whether or not that counts as “Salah’s replacement” is a distraction.

As Earl says, Babbel was a brilliant attacker too.

It’s out of date as a statement of how things are. It’s absolutely correct about how things should be.

He’d detest it all and he’d be right to. I don’t think that would make him wildly out of date, it’s alright to look and things and say how they could be better rather than just going “that’s modern life”.

It’s all good and that’s why we don’t sign expensive flops, or players who don’t fit the manager’s plans. And we have good succession plans for when key players leave. And we don’t have players running down their contracts. And we don’t have a lopsided squad. And we don’t employ managers whose style clashes with their predecessor’s. And we have continuity when managers leave because the DoF remains in place. At a football club, there's a holy trinity – the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don't come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques.

Talking about “people” is cowardly, fwiw. Talk to the people you are talking to.

I’d find it hard to name unsuccessful top flight clubs who don’t have a DoF model too, it’s what everyone does, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for us. Maybe it’d be alright if we didn’t have owners who are the easiest marks since John Lennon met Magic Alex and Allan Klein.

All of that could be done by someone who reports to the manager, as opposed to someone who’s in charge of the manager. We all understand the theory but more often than not at our club it’s been a mess.
