Performance enhancing drug usage in the Premier League

I'm not sure what you know about Armstong's defence such that it is, but there is a constant implication that he had to do it because everybody else did, which is what you are presenting as mitigation. You'd be right to say it isn't linked to statistics but its pretty hard to produce statistics when the testing is negligible to non-existent and you're right it is remiss not to legislate around the 99 to 99.9% and that is exactly what is happening and what the problem is. www.cagepotato.com/chief-of-us-anti-doping-agency-calls-mma-drug-testing-horrific-and-a-joke/ http://behindthegloves.com/news/drug-testing-in-boxing-is-there-any-hope/ In which case your definition of hyperbole would seem to exclude logic & common sense. And yes, given that I know a Welsh Rugby Union international from that time who now has some psychological issues - most likely linked to repeated concussions - I would say that, with hindsight, the same arguments could logically be applied to the professional/amateur conundrum. Of course the amateurism of the time was linked to a ridiculous notion upheld by some idiots with outmoded thoughts on gentlemen whose ideals sadly gave no thought to the well-being of the players. -

'Hyperbolic' in your opinion. Lets see what Amir Khan, whose been on the wrong end, thinks about it? http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2012/may/10/amir-khan-lamont-peterson-cancelled "He could have destroyed my life" Of course I understand what PEDs are being used for its right there in the name and if you're increasing performance by 0.00001% in a sport where lives are already in danger you are increasing that danger. Fair enough if you don't think its likely to increase power but I beg to differ as does this which explains my thinking better than I can:- http://www.boxinginsider.com/columns/a-crash-course-on-testosterone-hypgonadism-and-doping/ "Given the rise of admitted & busted testosterone users in combat sports, eventually a crisis will happen in boxing or MMA sooner rather than later. A testosterone user will end up crippling or killing an opponent and the testosterone issue will blow up on a massive scale in the media — and rightfully so. Testosterone usage gives anabolic steroid users a second chance at doping. Testosterone usage gives those who are abusing pain killers even more reason to continue their vicious cycle. The same can be said about fighters who suffer from permanent brain damage who end up getting a testosterone prescription in order to take more physical punishment and suffer even more brain damage. Testosterone is power in combat sports. It can increase the knockout ratio of a fighter, even at an older age. Unlike using testosterone in order to increase your strength to hit a homerun or perform better at track & field, testosterone usage in combat sports allows a fighter to not only cause more brain damage against an opponent but also receive more brain damage as their career is extended due to getting permission to use testosterone because their body can’t produce testosterone naturally any longer. Testosterone usage is a legitimately scary medical problem in combat sports and deserves intense public scrutiny. Lives are at stake here. If you don’t care about the cheaters, then at least care about fighters who are getting cheated against and are in a more vulnerable position to suffer their own form of physical damage." This is the ever popular Lance Armstrong defence all over again. Once again, massive tool though he clearly is, even Lance never beat the crap out of anybody. * * Clearly not true, but probably true in terms of bike racing. -

I'm not sure where this digression has come from but I'll answer. I think by taking you are subjecting others to greater risk by increasing power but the opponent matching by also doping would not increase their ability to withstand damage to - for the most obvious examples - the brain, kidneys, nose or genitals by the same order of magnitude. Similarly I'm not sure which, if any, drugs actually help prevent muscle damage or broken bones I'm not really sure where this digression is headed but I'll answer anyway. Surely PEDs increase risk because they increase power in the combatant without increasing the ability to withstand this by the same order of magnitude. So for example a boxer can punch a lot harder thanks to PEDs but his brain, kidney's, nose & genitals are no more resistant to injury - in fact injuries may be dangerously masked in the short term by other side effects of certain PEDs (testosterone for example) clouding judgement. But this is beside the point unless we aren't accepting that (these) drugs are bad mmmkay & this Chael dude is a bit of a whopper?? The central point I was making is that doping is worse in sports where opponents beat the crap out of each other than in sports where competitors merely tootle along beside each other? -

I don't think PEDs are doing a lot to the body and/or brain's ability to prevent injury. More likely they are adding to it. That's beside the point though if you know other fighters are doing it you walk away. I wasn't referring to UFC/MMA (of which I know nothing) but all combat sports. Actually think it would be more of an issue in (for example) boxing where I'd guess that head injuries are more prevalent?? Similarly think it could be a massive problem in Rugby (not combat but highly adversarial). I'd actually be keen to know what the testing regimes are like in all these sports - remember Mayweather making a big deal of it with regards to fighting Pacquiao - maybe an excuse, maybe not. -

You'd be giving yourself power that are simply beyond the reach of a normal fighter, outside what a human is/should be capable of. Dopers in non-combat sports are only really endangering themselves, there's not the same scope for bodily harm. Seems much worse to me anyway. In my oversimplistic word its theft vs assault. -

Hmm, it is quite interesting and eloquently written but it misses the point by a country mile. Doping in a combat sport is many miles worse than anything Ben Johnson or Lance Armstrong have done, you could quite easily be putting the life of a clean fighter at risk. -
