He's better at passing and he's better at controlling the pace of the game, which is presumably part of why Gerrard was taken off. For all of Gerrard's undoubted ability, the fact that he was all over the shop was part of the reason why Finnan was left so exposed for the majority of the match. Gerrard is a brilliant player, but he doesn't seem to know when to rein himself in sometimes.
