Maybe I am being unduly pessimistic here, but if the "European Super League" proposals are real, and as has been mooted before there will be no relegation, then Hicks and Gillett can afford to dispense with Benitez and sell a top player or two each season to service the debt. We will undoubtedly be invited into the league and no longer need to worry about qualification for the biggest money spinning tournament in world club football. It's a frightening prospect that the future of European football is in the hands of a few men such as Hicks, Gillett, the Glazers, Abramovich, Berlusconi and Perez. I really do fear that such a league is imminent as it would suit those carpetbaggers down to the ground.
