Phil236849
from the mother site Rafael Benitez has hit back at Dutch coach Marco Van Basten after he criticised Jan Kromkamp for moving to Anfield. Van Basten dropped Kromkamp from his squad for the midweek friendly with Ecuador after revealing his frustration at the player's decision to sign for the Reds where first team football won't be guaranteed. Benitez is angry with the remarks and insists his transfer window signing will be figuring in his first team plans between now and the end of the season. "I have seen the comments. If you want to say something like this you should talk directly to the player, not to the press," said Benitez. "If you want to control the career of the player, talk to him, not to the newspapers. In football now you expect to hear agents talk like this, but not people with no daily relationship with the player. "It's not his business. We're talking about the future of a player and his family. I don't see how joining Liverpool can be negative. "Kromkamp was not playing in Villarreal and we decided to make a good swop. "He started for Liverpool last weekend and worked hard as a right winger. We used him because we need a solution and he showed he is a good player." Skillz
Well said Rafa. Summed it up perfectly. Total respect for Van Basten but why use the media to make this point. Poor management especially as the player is likely to feature regularly from now on.

Runehammer
I may well be wrong here but I thought Van Basten was moaning mainly about his move to Villareal rather than us?
DanielS
Not like a Dutch footballer (even and ex one) to speak his mind. They're normally so quiet and reserved. Edited March 3, 2006 by DanielS

G Richards
Van Basten went down in my book with his recent comments but I still can't bring myself to dislike him. He was such a good striker and it was a great shame his career ended early through injury. Still, he needs to learn to act a bit more like a manager and be more discreet with his comments. He should follow the example of Sven

floyd
Can't realy bring myself to slag Van Basten off. To all those youngsters who think Shevchenko is good, he aint a patch on how good Van Basten was in his prime
Nebraska Red
van basten, rikjaard and gullit. what a group they were. it's a pity the Dutch did not have enough other players to get the most of the talent those 3 players had.

I really liked watching that trio too. But the real owners of world cups during their peak were W Germany and Argentina. W Germany was a complete team and Argentina were pretty unimpressive, like Holland, except their one star player was even better than the trio of VB, Gullit and Rikaard. Those three were kind of unlucky to be around during two great performers of the time (Maradotina and the whole W Germany outfit). Never mind W Germany - Brasil & Germany have been all but 1 WCF since 1952 (that was 78 - Arg-Hol)

Nerik
Gullit, Rijkaard, Van Basten and I'd also add Ronald Koeman to those 3. One of the best defenders in the 80s and 90s, probably only bettered by Franco Baresi.
Snookie
I still reckon a game between that AC Milan side and the Liverpool team of 87-88 would take some beating as a spectacle. I dont think i have ever seen more perfect league sides.
