Who exactly have we missed out on? It looks like Agger is almost sorted and the only mention of our interest in Vidic was via the media - nothing from the club. Our interest in Simao is known, certainly - all the press in Portugal have him coming to us and even saying we are his prefered choice - and this AFTER we have made it clear to Benfica we won't pay silly money.

We should have paid £17m for Owen don't ya know.

By the way. I have been told from a very reliable source that we wanted to buy Theo Walcott last summer. Southampton wanted 3,5 mill. We offered 3 mill, and told them to take it or leave it. After negotiations we said no to pay the extra 500.000, and Walcott stayed. We now know how much his value are. Parry messed it up again.

Why do people keep coming out with this?

People keep coming out with stuff like that because if they hear a rumour that happens to match what they want to believe, then they seem to ignore any logical analysis of why the rumour is total tosh and simply believe it anyway.

I think there's an element of truth in what Anfield Cop says about the way we go about the transfer market,Nobody wants the money throwing around wildly like in the Ged days but this is Rafa now and once we have carefully identified our targets,we might be a touch more incisive (if that's the right word) to conclude our dealings. Most of our transfer dealings do seem to turn out to be never ending sagas for some reason! Would it really surprise anyone if that story about Walcott were true? Saying that,it's early days in this window as yet!

Thanks pjwy ! :applause:

Because it's true, and because it is madness to say no to an agreement because of a difference of 500.000 pounds when we are talking about maybe the best talent in British football since Owen and Rooney.

its also true that you dont know what went on

so dont talk in such definate terms

it always make me literally laugh out loud when people come out with these rants, despite:

1. not knowing who our main targets are

2. not knowing how much we offer

3. not knowing how much we have to spend

4. not understanding how the negotiations take place

5. not knowing why the deals break down

all this "FFS, we should have just offered an extra half a mill" stuff is truly embarrassing

I work in an industry which has fans' forums devoted to it. The level of ignorance amongst fans about what goes on inside businesses is staggering, as is the arrogance of any amateur who thinks they know exactly how a Chief Executive is going wrong

and all this when our club is in the strongest position it has been in for decades!

So basically to recap... we're doomed?

Not quite.

Parry and Moores hatched a plan to run the club into the ground. They hired Rafa to make sure it was done properly...only the 3 of them are that bad at their jobs that they've actually bought some very good players, won the Champions League and only succeeded in cementing our position as one of the top clubs in Europe.

A plan fiendishly clever in its intricacies.

 I might have to go and watch it. Got it on a DVD with that You Only Move Twice episode.

Agent: Now, when I say, "Hello, Mr. Thompson," and press down on your foot, you smile and nod.

Homer: No problem.

Agent: Hello, Mr. Thompson! (presses on Homer's foot)

Homer: (whispers to other agent) I think he's talking to you

" Hey kids, wanna drive through that cactus patch? "

I have to agree with most of that, in principle, but the problem is. it is also a charter for 'question nothing, accept everything'.

Some fans are more knowledgable than others, and some have more experience in 'industry' than others. You can't just write off the opinion of a club's entire 'public' so glibly.

I judge by a combination of common sense and results. Many of us were very nervous throughout the summer at a lack of progress on important fronts in the transfer market. We were constantly told to stop being panic merchants. All those concerns were finally vindicated during what was a poor last week of the summer transfer window.

Anyone who apologises for those failures is doing themselves and the club a disservice. Mistakes were clearly made and even if Rick Parry won't acknowledge it, Rafa certainly has.

Of course, we could be on the verge of two good new signings (Agger and Simao) that will calm nerves and make up for the summer. However, it is not crazy to suggest that some patterns could be repeating themselves. Buying in the January transfer window is surely best conducted at the begining of it rather than the end, because a) you run the risk of being 'timed out' on targets (as in the summer), and b) you lose a whole month of the remaining 5 of the season when you could have been bedding that new buy into your squad.

It also has to be pointed out that , in reality, the window never closes, just the period in which negotiations are formalised is. It's not unreasonable to ask why we couldn't sealed our major targets before January 1st even arrrived. We have done so in the past and Man utd seem to have virtually done so this season.

If we're after Simao or Agger why not submit our full and final offers for those players back in November ? We may fail to secure the players, but at least we won't be held to ransom during the tight January wndow, and would have time to move on to other targets.

I see that most posters are turning against me on this issue. I may have been a bit too negative, and my bad english may also be a factor (Diffuicult to express myself).

What David says is one of my main points. After failing in the summer, why couldn't we finalize the deals before January, and just do the necessary formalities after Jan the 1st ?

I know that it is just January the 9th, but I fear that it will be like last summer, when major tranfers were dragged on till the last day.

i 100% agree

The problem is thta people expect immediate action and the world doesnt work like that

Not quite Dave; I'd say immediate results are not always possible, but immediate action - yes

2 people of note agree with me (3 if you count David Hodgson) they are Sun Tzu and Gerrard Houllier

If the players we want to sign do not have their heart set on joining us then it's better they don't. We'll get better service if they do and they will do their bit in the transfer negotiations. I hope they will.

What's the point in paying over the odds for a player who doesn't care?

No, people do not expect 'immediate action' for it's own sake. I just expect Liverpool to sign the calibre and type of player it says it wants to sign. It's not that much to ask. The club has always worked like that.

The club didn't achieve it's transfer goals last summer so it is reasonable to muse that it might not again. It's not lunacy or heresy to suggest that we really should expect some success in this transfer window.

1. Yes, some people on here DO want immediate action..people have been gnashing teeth since thre 01st Jan

2. it's the 09.01.06./..How do you know we wont?

3. The first line of the second paragraph is rubbish. You dont know what is going on, you are party to the same information I am.....And I have no clue what and where we are at.....The manager has stated his aims and I would assume the club are working toward them. If this is still the case on Jan 30th tne I will be worried, but not one working week into it

While I agree with 99% of that, your last paragraph I would add to by saying that in August, it didn't really matter WHEN we signed people, up to the end of the deadline. However, the sooner we get reinforcements in in Jan, during the season, the better surely?

Compare the Mancs, who have gone and bought Vidic, their CB reinforcement, within days of the window opening and who will make his debut next week (I would assume) to us, who still haven't tied down the signature of Agger. Now I don't have a clue about the ins and outs of transfers, and I'm sure there are perfectly good reasons for that, but the outward appearance to many fans in just that case is we are slow at tieing up deals.

do you think we have been in contact with Brondby over Agger??

The transfer window opened nine days ago

it has another 22 days left

explain your definition of last minute

Rubbish. The transfer window is constantly open in real terms. The window is just the period in which deals become formally registerable. Liverpool secured Anelka before the January window opened, why is not possible for us to have used the four months since Aug. 31st to secure our stated targets (right mid and centre half).

Defnition of last minute = Simao getting on the plane on the last day of the summer transfer window. Maybe not exactly the last minute (if we're being pedantic) but last hours!!

I'm simply echo DH's comments (which are very balanced in my opinion) that it 'seems' like we have not learned our lesson (especially on that deal). How come in the past 4 mths we did not move that forward?
