Genuine question here but what is the massive obsession with this formation and us deploying it for every game?

Yes we had great success with it under Rafa but it seems like alot of people are under the impression it's the only way to be successful! Every pre match formation regardless of the personal must be a 4-2-3-1, Every player linked with us in the transfer threads is shoehorned into a imaginative 4-2-3-1 formation. Tell me i'm wrong if i am but has Kenny even employed this formation? We've had Wingbacks, 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 etc

Oh and can we please stop putting Suarez down on the left of a three behind Carroll because that will never happen, Those two in my opinion will always play intandem as a two with Suarez floating all over the pitch.

4-3-3 gets the best out of Gerrard. There are signs he may be growing into a 4-4-2 player again but barring a top notch midfielder in there alongside him, we'll need the three in the centre to properly dominate midfield in many games.

Kuyt is wasted wide in a 4-4-2, which leaves us with the quandary of having no one at all worth playing wide in a 4-4-2 except maybe Gerrard and I don't see this happening. usually fullbacks also have slightly more license to roam forwards in 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 than in a 4-4-2 which suits a player like Johnson well.

Our current personnel is just better geared for it right now. Might change in the summer, it would be nice if nothing else if we had the breadth to play 4-4-2 with players that fit the system without having to worry about a lack of quality.

don't see that very often these days.

don't think we've had a proper one since about 5 years ago

I thought a romario was a duplication of a thread topic that has just been started by another poster.

These are delusions of grandeur posts 'I've put my opinion in one thread but actually my opinion doesn't deserve to get lost in here so I'll start a new thread'

I hope this is not a true Romario, the great man deserves more than this.

That's a romario - so named as Romario kept f***ing doing it all the time.

While I'm no advocate of putting Suarez wide, he didn't get involved on Saturday until he was put on the left. He and Kuyt have looked a better partnership than Suarez/Carroll, but AC is still finding his way to sharpness.

Ah cheers, I though he just never looked at other peoples threads. I thought it was more f***wittery than ego driven.

The world is a slightly less joyful place this afternoon ....

In the heyday of the Romario age we were treated to them almost every week. Sometimes more than one a day. Of course the Romario has gone out of vogue but still has its die hard followers.

Oh, he did that too. But it all started with the ego driven bit....then moved on to the f***wittery.

Take out Maxi and put in Kuyt and I would agree

I'm not sure what people mean by 433. Is it two strikers and a winger or two 'hole' players behind a lone striker ? Either way one of the support strikers is going to have to drop defensively wide when the ball is lost, and so once again the 442 default applies.

If a 433 means we play a midfield 4 but with a predominantly attacking winger on one side and a more tucked in wide man on the other (as per 87/88) then I like that. It's a 442 but one with the best balance IMO.

I think that Kenny wants Kelly at right back and Johnson left. I hope so.

Aurelio is a busted project, we need to get shot of him. Agger gets one more season unless we could actually get decent cash for him this summer for the same reason.

That's my best guess at what Dalglish has in mind for us next season. I think we already have a few candidates on the books for the tucked-in player if he plays on the right (e.g. Meireles, Kuyt, Gerrard, perhaps Johnson). Its the wide player on the left we are clearly missing.

Agree with this (although you are way too eager to show that every formation is a 4-4-2. :bleh: ).

At the moment we seem to switch from a 4-4-2 (4-4-1-1) in defense to a 4-3-3 in attack. In defense Meireles drops down to the left side of defence while Kuyt drops down to RW. Then in the transition to attack Meireles gets up in front of Spearo and Lucas while Suarez and Kuyt get up to wide forward positions (one closer to Carroll than the other).

This provides the best balance but requires players like Meireles and Kuyt that have the energy levels needed to move between the two positions as needed.

Didn't he also develop the Bebeto - which was when he Romariod himself? A very rare form but highly valued by seasoned forum watchers.
