Their sporting director bloke said loads of times they tried to keep him and offered him a new deal. It's still a bit cheeky mind given Degen wanted out, why would he go back?

He wanted out because Liverpool came in for him, I don't think he has got anything against Dortumnd

I thought that there was a bit of afters when he left. Something along the lines of Dortmund saying that they hadn't wanted to keep him anyway and that they were surprised Liverpool were even interested.

He was injured for the majority of the last season, and was frozen out by the management when he was fit because he wouldn't sign the new contract

Not wanting to incur the wrath of the superfans, the likelihood is that when he is fit Degen will only be a bit part player, especially with the current good form of Arbeloa. Blaszczykowski on the other hand, looks a quality player when i've seen him, and would likely offer a lot more to the team, especially with our RM options not being plentiful. Also able to fill in at rightback if needed.
