GERRARD INJURY BLOW FOR REDS

Paul Hassall at Anfield 27 August 2008

Liverpool's progress to the Champions League group stage has come at a cost after Rafael Benitez revealed the news that Steven Gerrard will undergo an operation on his groin on Thursday.

The Reds boss admitted it was a blow to lose his skipper but is hopeful he will make a speedy recovery after he played the full 120 minutes of Liverpool's extra-time win at home to Standard Liege.

"I'm disappointed because Gerrard will have an operation tomorrow," he said.

"He has a groin problem. We knew it could be like this and I was surprised when I was reading some of the newspapers saying he has to play and has to start but he had a problem and now he will have an operation and will be out for 10-15 days.

"It isn't too much because he needs to have it because he is having pain with it. When he went with the national team we knew he had a problem and in the first-leg too.

"I was talking with the doctor yesterday and today we talked with him. He said he would play with pain and after it he would have an operation.

"He knew he had to keep going tonight because he was having the operation tomorrow."

Missing the international games. Excellent news.

Yeah him not being able to train properly for 2 weeks is f***ing great news given he's already missed part of his pre season.

"out for 10-15 days".

10 days to the manc game from the op.

Shouldn't have played for England when he did in a nothing game, but i guess ultimately that wouldn't have changed the fact he needed to get this done.

At least Mascherano is back hopefully hes ok to play on the weekend, going to be very difficult against Villa im sure they'll be fired up after all the Barry stuff and we've just had a tough game.

Perversely it may help with the formation we can go 4-4-2 with Keane and Torres up front, Masch and Alonso in the middle.

Yep, could be doubtful depending on his recovery time.

It's a lingering problem. If he's going to miss games for the operation, it is far, far better for him to miss England games rather than Liverpool games.

Stevie will more than likely miss the united game and possibly be out for upto 6 weeks....

I would rather trust what the club is saying regarding the injury than some surgeon who in his first sentence makes anything else he says pointless by saying "it all depends on the diagnosis" and of course he hasn't examined Gerrard so how can he tell how long he will be out? Answer is he can't.

i suspect you're right fred, mad as it would be to play villa away with a 4-4-2.

i don't understand how rafa can have seen the way torres played last season, and gerrard, and then decided that torres needs a partner in a 4-4-2.
