Mullah_Owen Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I read this article in the Echo. Pisses me off when ex-players think they know better. Success now a must for Rafa Benitez - John ToshackDec 11 2007 Liverpool Echo FORMER Liverpool great John Toshack believes it is time for Reds manager Rafael Benitez to start delivering before tackling the club’s owners about transfers again. Benitez had a high-profile disagreement with Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks over a perceived lack of support in his attempts to bring in new players. However, Toshack has sided with the co-chairmen in their stance of wanting success on the field first. Liverpool’s first priority is to beat Marseille tonight to secure passage into the knockout stages of the Champions League. “The Americans are well within their rights to slam the brakes on,” said the Wales manager. “This is Rafa’s fourth season and I guess he’s getting near to having signed 50 players - many of whom are now not even with the club. “The unfinished business he and Liverpool have in front of them is to finally win the Premier League.”
Benitez Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 (edited) dunno bout bitter, but really, inferior managers should stop opening their huge gobs. Surely it's a postitive thing that some signings he made are not at the club. Shows that he isn't afraid to make changes and replace players with better. His signing record is good, thats one thing Toshack has no right to make cheap shots about. Somethings I think other managers speak like this to take the attention away from themsleves. He, and guys like Allardyce are struggling at their jobs and have no right critisising others. Edited December 11, 2007 by Benitez
The_Adder Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 “This is Rafa’s fourth season and I guess he’s getting near to having signed 50 players - many of whom are now not even with the club. Whereas with Houllier they were ALL still at the club. True inferior manager spouting the party media line - Rafa has done great from what hes had, people very very easily forget that the Mancs & Chelski has spent vast and I mean vast amounts of cash for years and years and we have spent over £40m once, although the amount raised in the summer covered almost half of that. Rafa is the way forward.
johnc Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 it's a comment any fan would make not just ex: players etc. As much as we are behind Rafa I don't think taking on the owners in the media is a wise move.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 er - start delivering? 3 seasons, 4 finals
RP Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Think Toshack talks a lot of sense, myself. When I say "a lot of sense", of course I mean "total f***ing bullsh**".
Hassony Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 er - start delivering? 3 seasons, 4 finals Like "big sam" said, if it wasn't for the two european cup finals and the fa cup Rafa would have been facing the sack!!!

cymrococh Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 (edited) True, if Rafa wasn't great, he'd be sh*t, and we should sack him. Edited December 11, 2007 by Paul Caruso
stonty Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Like "big sam" said, if it wasn't for the two european cup finals and the fa cup Rafa would have been facing the sack!!! Yeah, what have the Roman's ever done for us?
L19red Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 what gives you the right to call one of our greats a bitter c***? If it had been some nomark ex player slagging Rafa then maybe you've got a point, but Toshack was a fantastic player and a successful manager, and he wasnt even slagging him off.
Guz Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 He doesn't really say much to be honest. Certainly not enough to be bothering to get worked up about. Rafa has to prove he is capable of challenging for the league. No two ways about it really. Toshack hasnt said he thinks Rafa will fail.
Rimbeux Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I think the general perception is that he threw his toys out of the pram in public in not a Liverpool Way having been told he'd get no more money having spent loads already. Doubt that's going to change a lot but there are alternative points of view, as there are on most things in life after a closer look.
The walters step over Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 what gives you the right to call one of our greats a bitter c***? If it had been some nomark ex player slagging Rafa then maybe you've got a point, but Toshack was a fantastic player and a successful manager, and he wasnt even slagging him off. I feel the same as you on this point, there does seem to be quite a lot of it going around though but it does seem fashionable nowadays to have a go at former players of ours, someone on here was having a go at Dudek the other day because he said that Real Madrid was the biggest club in the world! I'm with you, I don't actually see what Toshack has said that is so wrong, in all the time Rafa's been here we haven't had a sniff of the league - that's just a fact, and I don't see how pointing that out means that one of the greats in our history is a c***.
Bailo Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I'm with you, I don't actually see what Toshack has said that is so wrong,He used the fact the Rafa has bought around 50 players "many of whom are now not even with the club." a) Not true and b) So what if it was? Ferguson and Wenger have had to sell a lot of players that they bought. Off the top of my head, I can think of only Kromkamp (made profit on), Zenden (free), Nunez (free/cheap), Morientes (5m) and Garcia (at least broke even) of Rafa's buys that we've later sold. It feeds this net spend b******s.
Guest kaip Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 count yourselves lucky you havent got to listen to his b******s every time your national side plays
TheLa Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I'm with you, I don't actually see what Toshack has said that is so wrong I'm not having a go at Toshack or calling him a c*** but what he says is wrong. He's basically saying the yanks would be right not to back the manager in the transfer market this January because he's already signed fifty [sic] players and he should be able to win the league with the squad he has. I suppose it comes down to whether you think the Americans should back Rafa in January or they should stop him spending. I think the Americans should back Rafa so Toshack is wrong, I don't think he's a bitter c*** though.

He waqs just saying that in his view Rafa has been given a decent amount of money with which to mount a serious challenge this year and perhaps it would be better for the club if he stopped the public power games with the owners. Whether you agree with that or not, surely you can agree a guy that played such a big part in our history deserves more respect than being called a know nothing c***? I'm a scouser born and bred and a Liverpool fan for as long as I remember and I will/and have stick up my city and my club but this attitude that anyone that critises is a c*** or k**b head or whatever is beyond childish and quite frankly embarresses me to f***.
Cobs Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 (edited) fwiw Rafa has bought 45 players and sold 46 net sale THAT you MoFo !!!!!! Edited December 11, 2007 by Cobs

Armin_Tamzarian Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Toshack has always spoken of Rafa with respect in the past. From certain comments from the likes of Rush, Hansen and now Toshack I wonder if we can see the start of connected Liverpool figures detaching themselves from Rafa?
