did anyone else think the ref was awful last night

and was their first goal offside?

and should we of had a pen

He was utter s****. Seeing as you get ripped to bits for being "bitter" "not able to take defeat" etc if you criticise a ref when we lose lets tear this c*** to pieces.

He was woeful, how on earth Bikey especially stayed on the pitch i'll never know, their first goal should never of stood although thats the linesmens job, we should of had a pen, Lucas's booking was ridiculous seeing as it was about his first foul, some t*** wasn't booked in the first half despite pulling Leto down by his shirt when he was still about 5 yards from the ball. I could go on and on.

And Steve Coppell is a t*** aswell.

We are getting the s*** end of all decisions so far this season.

4 penalties conceded. 1 deffo. 1 50/50 and 2 that shouldn't have been given.

Whereas we don't get anything, clear penalty last night not given.

Sure it'll change soon, we're due something.

He was awful I thought.

If that had been someone like Meite off Bolton clattering Rooney from behind all the time then you can bet your bottom dollar that Johnny Foreigner would have been given a yellow very early to calm him down.

Also, if Shevchenko had been racing through on goal at Stamford Bridge and Carra did that you can be sure it would be a penalty !

Was the goal offside - he did not obstruct the keepers view of the initial shot but he did obstruct him from diving. If Itandje had of dived into him then the decision would have been easier to call but I do think it was offside (but that was the linesmans call not the refs).

Yes, but we know Itanjde doesn't dive - big wayne said so. Maybe the ref/linesman reads YNWA?

I've got quite a lot of time for Coppell. At least he sets up his team to try and play so you get something of a spectacle. Much better than the likes of Bruce (and a good many other managers) who simply put 10 men behind the ball when they play us.

You watch, referees are always more lenient in the Carling Cup than the Prem, they are starting to be more lenient in the FA Cup as well. It's as if the managers have primed them before the start of the season so the players don't get needless bookings that carry on into the league.

And yes, he was awful.

What made the ref's performance even more galling was he seemed to follow each bad tackle on one of our players by awarding a free kick to them for something far less serious, like a slight shirt pull.

Coppell - Torres was the difference

Posted on: Tue 25 Sep 2007

Steve Coppell had no trouble in putting his finger on why Rafael Benitez's boys progressed into the Fourth Round thise evening - Fernando Torres' contribution proved the difference.

"The creation and the intent was there. The difference in the end was about £24million," he told the post-match press.

"I think we created a number of opportunities. We had a lot flashing across their goal, which we never really got on the end of.

"But we are disappointed. You set yourself up, you want to play against the best players and that's where you make your reputation - by stopping these people from playing.

"For us to come off seeing him [Torres] score three - we've got to be disappointed about that."

The flairy Spaniard was rested for much of Liverpool's goalless draw with Birmingham at the weekend and he made it hard for Benitez to ignore him for the next league encounter with a stunning hat-trick tonight.

"Looking at their sides in recent weeks, I predicted it would be Torres and Crouch that started tonight," Coppell continued.

"But we made no special plan just for Torres. Maybe we should've done!

"For the first half, I thought he was fairly anonymous. He didn't really contribute that much.

"But with each goal he grew in confidence and became more expressive. And that is the quality bought for £24m.

"Realistically he's yet to set the world on fire in this division. We thought if we were competitive with their strikers it would make life difficult for them and we did that in the first half.

"They weren't much of an attacking threat early on but as the game wore on and they got their goals - Torres grew in stature.

"We had to then take more and more gambles and that only opened up more avenues for him."

The national press naturally questioned the Reds boss' selection policy on the back of Torres' impact at Madejski Stadium and they asked Steve Coppell whether he thought that the days of the old fashioned partnership were history.

"I don't think you will get smash and grab combinations the way you used to...no!

"It is all about horses for courses nowadays - who's had a rest, who's travelled the world playing international football, who looks good in training.

"Sports science is advancing so much now that you can get feedback telling you who is best suited to play. All these factors play a part now.

"It wasn't so long ago that Liverpool won the league with 15 players over a 42 game season. I think those days are gone and will never happen again.

"Maybe not at the level of Liverpool, but I've got four strikers too, who all think they should be playing.

"When they get an opportunity, they all want to make a Torres impact. And when they don't, like tonight, they naturally feel frustrated."

Realistically speaking you've just come across as a t***.

F*ck knows what we've done for the decisions we've been on the end of this season. They seem to be desperate to take any chance they can to f*ck us over.

Rick Parry must have suggested reducing the officials pension fund to the FA or something, it's bizarre.
